COURSEDESCRIPTION: Themanagementofecosystemserviceshasbecome apragmatic attimes,controversial goalof resourcemanagementconservation. In thiscoursewewill examinethescience behind ecosystem services,exploretheconcept’sinfluenceon resourcemanagement,andgaintoolsthatenableyou toincorporateecosystemserviceassessment into yourresearch.Wewillread foundationalliterature,networkwithleaders in thefield byattending theNaturalCapitalSymposiumat Stanford University in California, and workon independentand/orsmall groupprojectsthatfocuson developing topics in thefield.Upon completionofthiscourseyouwillunderstand thecoreconceptscontributing to theecosystemservicesfield andhavethe abilitytoincorporatethe conceptofecosystemservicesintoyour ownwork.

COURSECOMPONENTS: There areno examsforthiscourse.Ratherstudentswill beexpectedtoactivelyparticipatein classdiscussions, completefiveshortin-classoral presentations,andcompletean individual or smallgroup project(seemoredetailsbelow).

Thecourseincludes a6dayfield triptoStanford University to attendtheNaturalCapitalSymposium.Whileyou willnot bepenalized ifyoucannotattend thistrip,thisisan excellentopportunitytonetworkwith leadersinthe ecosystem servicesfield andseefirst-hand howecosystemservices arebeing incorporatedinto management.

Smallgroup project:Thesmallgroup project will a paperwrittenona subjectofthe students’choosing withconsultationand finalapprovalbytheinstructor.Theprojectwillentailturning in aprojectproposal;paperoutline;draft paper;anda finalpaper. It willalsoincludethreein-classprogressreportsand a finalprojectpresentation.

HOMEWORK:Homeworkisdue atthe startofeach classunlessotherwisediscussed. In addition,you areexpectedtohaveread and fullydigested assignedreadings. Iwill present a shortlectionmostclasses,butstriveforan interactiveatmospherewhereweexamineideastogether.Laterin thesemesterwemayhavesomewrittenassignmentsas webegin workingon thefinalpaper.Whenthisis thecase,theyaredue ontheappointed day. Inallcases,If extenuating circumstances occur andyoucannotcompletean assignment/reading/other, please,contact mebefore the duedateand wewill alternateschedule.
