Entry Form

Introduction

Wickers Gymnastics Club would like to invite you to participate in our first invitational competition for adults on 4th July 2015. It will be held at our newly improved purpose built gym club in Lancing West Sussex. The competition is for anyone aged 18 years and over who wishes to compete regardless of your experience or ability. We welcome you whether you are a complete beginner new to the sport, whether you are a retired gymnast, or perhaps a gymnastics coach that fancies a challenge and something to work towards. It is intended to be fun and relaxed - we aim to celebrate the achievements of all - whatever level you are working at.

Disciplines

The competition will contain the following disciplines:

Women’s Artistic Apparatus

  • Vault
  • A-bars
  • Beam
  • Floor

Men’s Artistic Apparatus

  • Floor
  • Pommel Horse
  • Rings
  • Vault
  • Parallel Bars (Dismounting into a pit)
  • High Bar ( either over pit or on asymmetric woman’s bars)

Unfortunately our floor is not a full sized floor but is just short of one. It is sprung and does not make a big difference in size.

The artistic competitions will be based on individual apparatus only to encourage those who are new to the sport, those who don’t seem to have as much time as they used to, or those nursing injuries to also be able to participate.

With the aim of supporting gymnastics for all, we also encourage both men and women to enter any of the apparatus! So if you are a male competitor who fancies women’s A-bars, or a female competitor who perhaps would like to try parallel bars – this is your chance!

Levels of Competition

For the artistic apparatus – we will aim to have three levels of competition - Novice, Intermediate & Pro. The moves that you can perform at any of these levels will be capped to ensure competitors are in the right categories and competing against similar level gymnasts.

As this is an apparatus competition, you may enter different levels for each apparatus. For example a total beginner might choose to only enter one apparatus as a starting point, whilst an ex floor and vault gymnast might need to enter intermediate floor and vault apparatus and beginner beam and bars. Another example might be a pro level women’s artistic gymnast who wants to enter men’s rings at beginner level!

As a general guide

  • Novice – gymnasts who may be new to the sport as adults, or who train for fun and exercise.
  • Intermediates – gymnasts who may have competed at school or club level in their younger years and those able to fulfil the requirements at this level
  • Pro – ex competitive gymnasts of regional level and above and those able to fulfil the requirements at this level

In the novice category the judges will be encouraged to mark what they see, and if the gymnast performs something that looks like a gymnastic move, they will be credited as such for it.

Whilst we encourage gymnasts to enter the correct level, the competition organisers retain the right to move a gymnast whilst the competition is in progress if it is felt they are competing at a much higher level than expected for that category. The gymnast will immediately be informed of the change.

Age Groups

Age categories for the artistic categories will be determined based on the number of entries to the competition. We do recognise however that gymnastics is much harder the older you are and therefore we will apply an age bonus to all competitors over the age of 20.

All artistic competitors will be given a bonus of 0.05 per year above the base year of the age group.

For example - if the age group is 30-40’s and the competitor is 32 they will receive 0.1, if the age group is 50-70 and the competitor is 65, they will receive a 0.75 bonus.

Please note: 18, 19 & 20 year olds will not receive an age bonus.

A competitors’ age will be calculated using their age as of January 1st in the year of competition. The age bonus will be added to the total score.

Eligibility

All competitors must be a member of British Gymnastics and hold a minimum of bronze membership. As this is not a British Gymnastics run event, non-British nationals are eligible to enter and win medals, providing they have the relevant membership/insurance.

Any former competitive gymnast should have retired for two years from international/National competition or one year from Regional (or above) competition/any competition with an NDP pathway.

Student gymnasts who compete in BUCS/university competitions are eligible to compete as these are not considered to be British Gymnastics events, however you must hold British Gymnastics insurance to compete.

Novice gymnasts – we welcome you even if you’ve never competed before in your life!

Code of points

Competitors should base their skills on the 2013-2017 FIG code of points which can be found on the FIG website by following the links below:-

However, in the recreational and intermediate levels, any recognisable gymnastics move, either from any previous code of points, or otherwise, will be credited as a move and awarded 0.1 difficulty value.

For more information please see the adapted rules and requirements for each level and apparatus which are included in this information book.

Coach Requirements

Competitors, no matter what age or level, need to have a coach present. This does not need to be the competitors own coach, however prior to the event the coach should have a good understanding of the competitors competency. The coach must be appropriately qualified for the skills being performed.

Music

All music submitted for Women’s Artistic floor routines must be:

  • On CD
  • The first and only track on the CD
  • Instrumental only
  • Within the specified time limit
  • 70-90 seconds long
  • Clearly labelled in permanent marker with the competitor’s name(s), club and discipline
  • Backed-up on another CD and brought to the competition, in case of unforeseen circumstances
  • Adhering to the British Gymnastics’ Copyright Policy - i.e. no Andrew Lloyd Webber, Disney or Cirque du Soleil

Equipment

Please note the following restrictions to apparatus

  • Vault - will be done on a table top vault and land on a landing area over a pit.
  • Beam - gymnasts requiring a run up for their mount will need to mount and dismount the same end of the beam
  • If you are competing on the parallel bars will need to dismount into a pit. A landing mat can be placed on top of the pit.
  • The floor area is not a full sized floor according to BG standards. It is not far off a full sized floor. We can supply measurements if required.
  • Men’s high bar will be either placed into the A-bars or placed over the pit. A landing mat can be put on top of the pit for dismounting

We recognise that adults are generally a bit more fragile than children and professional athletes; if you require an extra mat for your dismount or a single mat under the beam for example, please feel free to do so. Your safety comes first!! Judges will not give gymnasts deductions for reasonable additional mats. Please note mats/pads on or wrapped around the beam will be deducted for.

Spectators & Facilities

You are welcome to bring spectators with you, we do have a seating area from which you can stand and watch, but space is quite limited. There will be a small charge of £3 for each spectator you wish to bring with you (cash only – payable on entry to the gym).

You are welcome to park in our designated parking bays at the gym which are any of the parking outside of the building excluding the RED spaces. The RED spaces are for UNIT 8 and they require constant access at all times. You can also park on the road or on the Elm Grove which runs parallel to Cherwell Road. Elm Grove gives you easy access to the gym and there may be more parking there as the event is being held on a Saturday.

What to Wear

Whilst you are more than welcome to wear a leotard - it is definitely not compulsory and we recognise that especially for those new to competing it might be a bit scary!

Please wear appropriate sports clothing that isn’t too loose so as to constitute a hazard and doesn’t have buckles or clasps.

If you do choose to wear a leotard, you are more than welcome to compete with shorts or leggings over the top.

Jewellery and body piercings should not be worn and long hair should be tied back.

Cost

Entry to your first artistic competition apparatus event will cost £8.00.

After this, any further apparatus/disciplines will be charged at the following rates per person

1st event £8.00

2nd event £3.00

3rd and subsequent events £1.50

All non coded recognisable gymnastic and acrobatic moves will be awarded 0.1 DV. If it looks like a gymnastic move – it will be treated as one. For example, cartwheel and cat leap on floor, forward roll on beam, circle up on bars etc.

Compositional Requirements (CR)

These are special requirements that are specific to each apparatus and are awarded 0.5 once if present in the routine. There are five on each piece of apparatus (none on vault) @ 0.5 each.

Unlike FIG, CR do not need to be contained within the eight highest DV elements.

Artistry bonus

Beam & Floor – To reflect the emphasis on artistry in the 2013-2017 code of points - a bonus of 0.1 to 0.5 will be awarded to gymnasts who demonstrate excellent artistry on beam and floor.
