Provide overview of tour sites. The Sheboygan County Memorial Airport will likely have the museum open for browsing for early arrivals.

Majestic Crossing Dairy (9:15-10:15)

Majestic Crossing Dairy is a large CAFO sized operation managed by Ed and Dean Strauss and others. It is located only one mile outside the city of Sheboygan Falls. In July of 2015, construction of a fully-integrated manure management system began. The goal is to utilize and ultra-filtration and a reverse osmosis system to concentrate nutrients into 30% of the original manure volume while recovering 70% of the original volume as clean water suitable for drinking water for animals, washing, flushing, on the farm or direct discharge to local waterways. In 2016, Majestic Crossing became the only dairy farm in the State of Wisconsin to be granted a Pollution Discharge Elimination System (PDES) permit for a manure treatment system that produces clean water. In addition, Majestic Crossing has the largest number of robotic milkers on any farm in the state.

Lake Orchard Aquaponics (10:30-11:30)

Lake Orchard Aquaponics is a fishery and local producer of vegetables, located on a 150+ year old family farm near Sheboygan. Their products are fresh all year, grown in their greenhouse and state-of-the-art fish hatchery. Freshwater tilapia and vegetables are produced in a sustainable, symbiotic ecosystem. The farm also operates a bed and breakfast operation and café, as well as hosting weddings/gatherings in its newly remodeled barn.

Lunch (11:30-12:00)

Lunch will be served in Lake Orchard’s newly renovated event barn.

Phosphorous Removal System on a Large Agricultural Tile Drain – John Jens Farm (12:15-1:15)

In 2014, the Elkhart Lake Improvement Association asked the Planning and Conservation Department to provide assistance in addressing their concerns regarding water quality. A major area of concern was a 260 acre sub-watershed that discharges into the southwest corner of the lake. Two years of monitoring indicated that a significant amount of dissolved phosphorous was being discharged from a large 12” diameter agricultural subsurface drainage system. Two local farmers were contacted and showed an interest in installing a practice to remove this dissolved phosphorous. Their cooperation, however, came with a condition that our project would also address the issue of the 30-40 unsewered homes also along the SW corner of Elkhart Lake. The farmers speculated that these homes on conventional septic systems so close to the lake may be a greater problem than a field tile. Turns out the project consultants, Miller Engineering and Aleksandra Drizo, were in complete agreement. Hence was born a two-phase project to design, install, and monitor one project on a farm drain tile and the other is to be a secondary treatment tank installed on a conventional private onsite wastewater treatment system (POWTS). You will be touring an iron filter system designed to remove between 70%-80% of dissolved phosphorous being discharged from the drain tile.
