Job summary

To lead on Healthwatch Darlington’s outreach and volunteering programme. You will plan and deliver a programme of outreach and engagement activities across the community to gather the views of people who use health and social care. For many people these activities will be their first contact with Healthwatch so it will be an important part of the job to promote our work and to encourage people to become involved. As the Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator you will work closely with Darlington’s voluntary and community sector, complementing their work and drawing on their experience. You will recruit and support volunteers for a variety of roles, including assisting with outreach and engagement activities.

Key responsibilities

1.  Volunteer coordination role

·  Act as a point of contact for all Healthwatch Darlington engagement and volunteering.

·  Develop volunteering roles to support the work of Healthwatch Darlington.

·  Ensure appropriate induction processes are available to all Healthwatch Darlington volunteers.

·  Provide support to the Healthwatch Darlington volunteers.

·  Ensure there is an up-to-date register of volunteers and relevant training.

·  Enable volunteers to identify information and training needs.

2.  Outreach role

·  Develop relationships with local voluntary, community, patient and user groups, to further the work of Healthwatch Darlington.

·  Develop an appropriate programme of outreach activities to promote Healthwatch Darlington and gather people’s views and experiences of health and social care services in Darlington.

·  Ensure Healthwatch Darlington has a presence at relevant community events.

·  Develop and maintain a recurring programme of outreach at venues across the town.

·  Ensure that outreach and engagement sessions are delivered, either personally or via trained volunteers

·  Ensure that all data collected through community engagement work is properly recorded so that both Healthwatch Darlington and Healthwatch England have access to accurate information about people’s views and experiences.

3.  General

·  Answer and respond appropriately to enquiries that come through Healthwatch Darlington telephone or email.

·  Be aware of current trends in social care and health policy and service provision that may have an impact in Darlington.

·  Promote equality and diversity in all aspects of work and challenge discrimination

·  Take responsibility for own health and safety and that of others affected by Healthwatch Darlington’s operations.

·  Maintain the security and confidentiality of data and information handled by Healthwatch Darlington.

·  Undertake any personal training that may be required to keep up-to-date and fulfil the requirements identified for this job description and make full use of line management and supervision.

Essential requirements necessary for the role

·  A good standard of education including good English communication skills, both written and verbal, including the ability to produce clear, concise reports.

·  Experience of working with volunteers in a volunteer manager’s role or equivalent.

·  Ability to use IT effectively for communications and information management.

·  Experience of networking and working in partnership with the users of health and social care services and the organisations and groups that represent them.

·  An understanding of the needs of service users for the information and signposting required to make best use of services.

·  Computer literacy to include use of all Microsoft applications and email and ability to learn new skills quickly.

·  Ability to work as part of a team

·  Self-motivated, with initiative and willingness to be flexible.
