About Lion's Camp Hickory, Inc.
Lion's Camp Hickory, Inc. is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) corporation that was founded by the Baldwinsville and Moyer's Corners Lions Club as a means to provide diabetes education and social support programs such as CampHickory.
The Lions have always been "knights of the blind". Since diabetes remains the number one cause of blindness in America, diabetes education is critically
important to the Baldwinsville and Moyer's Corners Lions Clubs.
Lion's CampHickory
CampHickory is a one week summer daycamp for children, aged 6 - 12 years old, with type 1 diabetes.
The camp is staffed with mature adults and professionals in the field of diabetes. All the staff are trained about working with children and diabetes health issues.
The CampDirector, Mrs. Jill Hayes, is a Certified Dietician/Certified Diabetes Educator. According to Mrs. Hayes, the daycamp is "not a clinic in the woods." Rather it will be a week filled with activities that are fun while being educational about diabetes.
Activities during camp will include:
- Arts & crafts
- Fishing
- Hiking
- Fun science
- CampHickory Olympics
- Music and motion
- Volleyball
- Get wet water games
- Softball
- Kid's Carnival
Camp goals will be achieved by careful attention to basic life concepts such as:
- Socialization
- Coping
- Skill building
- Team building
- Bonding
- Diabetes education and management
Why Should My Child Attend
Daycamp?
CampHickory will provide your child with a recreational program and experience while at the same time learning about their diabetes. At CampHickory, your child will learn personal diabetes management skills that will enhance their self esteem.
Under the guidance of camp counselors and the other staff members, your child will be encouraged to mature through a feeling of independence. The camp staff will celebrate with each child as they gain self esteem and confidence in maintaining their health.
The campers will learn to understand the 4 most critical issues in their lives:
- Diet
- Exercise
- Stress levels
- Medications
All campers will have a "job" that contributes to the life of the camp, that will extend into their everyday lives.
The goals of CampHickory are:
- Every camper will be able to independently test their own blood sugar.
- To help the campers gain more independence as they learn better diabetes management skills.
- To enable children with diabetes to gain confidence by meeting others with diabetes.
- To provide the child who has diabetes an enjoyable, healthy experience in an environment away from home.
- To help children learn that diabetes is not a restrictive lifestyle.
- To help children recognize physical changes related to blood sugar fluctuations.

Diabetes Care
Campers will be under constant supervision by trained staff members, some who have diabetes themselves. Registered nurses will be onsite during camp.
Lunch and snacks are provided at CampHickory. The menu and range of snacks are carefully chosen a Registered Dietician.
Campers will be encouraged to learn how to check their own blood sugar levels, administer their own medications and record the results.
Diabetes education is an integral part of camp. The campers will be receiving instruction throughout each day, sometimes as an opportunity presents itself. At times, this instruction may be in the form of songs or silly skits that will give the campers an opportunity to "ham it up" while learning something else about themselves and diabetes.
CampSafety
The staff of CampHickory and the Lion's Clubs volunteers will make every effort to keep your child safe while at camp. A life guard will always be on duty if any activity, such as fishing, is close to the river. In the event of a storm, activities will shift into the Community House, recently expanded by the Baldwinsville Lions to its' current size of 37' x 80'. The Community House features 4 toilet rooms and a complete kitchen.
Staff are trained and knowledgeable about medical "sharps" and blood born pathogens along with diabetes awareness training.
Admission
Admission to CampHickory is not limited by race, color, creed, nationality, sex, disability, sexual orientation or any other protected group. However, for 2006, each week of camp will be limited to 20 campers. In order to provide the daycamp opportunity for as many children as possible, those wishing to return for week 2 will initially be placed on a waiting list until 4 weeks prior to camp. At that time, the director will make the decision about accepting return campers if total admission is below 20.
The camp staff reserves the right to refuse admission for medical conditions beyond our scope of care or to a camper with a communicable disease. A health screening will be conducted during check-in and campers with communicable diseases may be refused admission.
Camper Fee
For 2004, the fee to attend CampHickory is $50. Applications will be processed strictly on a first received basis. Once 20 campers have been accepted, all other applications and fees will be returned. A waiting list will be maintained in the event of a cancellation.
A Note About The Cost of Camp
The daycamp costs over $450 per camper. We charge only $50, which means the Lions Clubs are providing the balance through fund raising and other donations. Please consider making a donation or suggesting that your employer consider making a tax decuctible donation to CampHickory to help us continue with a very low cost service to children with type 1 diabetes.
