Segmental Arterial Pressures (SAP/PVR) and ABI Patient Information

A SAP/PVR and ABI test is conducted to evaluate the blood flow in the arteries of your legs.

Why is a SAP/PVR/ABI test performed?

a.  To evaluate for possible decreased blood flow to your legs and feet.

b.  To monitor the progression of vascular disease.

c.  To assess medical and surgical therapy.

Can I eat or drink on the day of the test?

Yes. Eat and drink as you normally would the day of the exam.

Should I take my medications the day of the test?

Yes. Take all of your medications at the usual times as prescribed. If you are having multiple tests on the same day, please review the instructions for each test.

What should I wear on the day of the test?

You may wear comfortable clothing. Please wear or bring a pair of loose fitting shorts to your appointment.

What happens during the test?

a.  A technician will bring you to the exam room and explain the procedure.

b.  You will be asked to put on your shorts and lay on an exam table.

c.  Blood pressure cuffs will be placed on your upper arms and 4 blood pressure cuffs will be placed on your legs.

d.  A machine will then inflate the blood pressure cuffs at different times and measure the pressure in each of the cuffs.

How long does the exam take?

Your exam is scheduled for 1 hour.

How do I get the results of my test?

After your cardiologist has reviewed your test, the results will be entered into your electronic medical record. Please allow 7-10 business days for routine results to be processed.

A copy of your test will be sent to your primary care doctor listed on your record. You can obtain access to your results through mychart. If you do not have a mychart account you can create one by visiting www.carycard.wakemed.org.
