Jubilee Medals

GO: I haven’t been able to find out any more about the county golf funding with regards to the Captain’s family golf day next year, as the August Main Committee meeting was cancelled due to holidays. I shall bring it up again at the next meeting in two weeks’ time.

CA: I have looked through the catalogue, and will ask CW to go ahead and purchase the monthly Jubilee medals for next year, but I haven’t been able to find the same silver jubilee trophy which I have seen online. I will go ahead and order the mentioned trophy and the Ditches/Hedges trophy within the next week or two.

6.Club Captain’s Report

The last matches of the main competition season are quickly approaching, the nights are closing in and the jumpers and wet weather-gear back in the bag after what has mostly been a wonderful summer of golf.

The league teams have had mixed fortunes, but Avalon A deserves a special mention for ending the season top of their division – Congratulations! The course is looking better than ever, the fairways are lush, the aprons well defined and the greens smooth and faster than previous years. Well done to the green-keepers.

The Seniors’ Invitation Day on the 23rd August was very successful and will hopefully continue to feature in years to come.

The Abbey Hill & Glastonbury & Street Rotary Club have had their annual charity days & raised a considerable amount of money for good courses. We really value their association with Wheathill GC.

The highlight for me this month was playing in the Pro-Am with Mark at Bowood Park. It was quite an experience to be part of a 4-ball, where the other 3 were driving the ball 300 yards.

My other memorable outing was at Enmore, playing in the Seniors’ Quantock Stag competition, which took a bit of a nautical twist on the 7th, when I jumped in to rescue my trolley, which had decided to self-start and went in the pond. I didn’t realise it was 6 feet deep, so a wetsuit and snorkel would have been a better attire. Both trolley & battery are still alive & well.

In the coming month, I look forward to the Pick’n Mix, The Team Captains’ Challenge Bowl, The Inter Village comp., the Men’s Pairs Open, The Cumisky Cup & The 3 Counties Freeman Trophy at Cricket St. Thomas.

Please also encourage more players to put their name down for the Club fundraising event, which has been re-scheduled for 28th October.

Happy golfing,

Gunnar

8.Team Captains Reports

Avalon A: CW: Report forthcoming.

Avalon B: PH:No report, Season finished 6 weeks ago.

Avalon C:AF: The team has had a disappointing last game, but with 3 key playersaway, a reasonable result, lost 3-2 home v CST. It has been however a great season.

We have finished 3rd in our division, which is probably the best result for a few years.

I (Dave Kerswell) have been asked by the team if I would continue as Avalon C Captain for next year and I have accepted.

3 Counties A: GH:Match on 12th August was an away loss 4-1 to Folke with the reserves also losing. Match 19th August an away loss 3½- 1½with the reserves also losing. Match

26th August was a home win 4-1 with the reserves winning. Our last match of the season was a 3½-1½home defeat against Wincanton. We finished in the bottom two.

3 Counties B: BB: We played our last match last Saturday in which we lost 3-2 which wasn’t a bad result against Long Sutton with the reserves also losing. We have finish joint third in the division.

Avalon Seniors: SO: Since our last meeting, Seniors lost 4-1 away at Long Sutton, who are top of the league. Our last match is the 14th September against Stockwood Vale who will finish second if they beat us convincingly, so we have a good incentive to beat them at home.

Incorporating Silver Jubilee onto our logo for next year!

CA has forward a sample and welcomes any other ideas for incorporating the Silver Jubilee onto our Logo for next year.

GO had already made a draft logo with a planned photo of the Silver Jubilee trophies and medals to be placed on the front page of next year’s diary. GO requested that CA have the photo available by the end of October, which he said he would. GO also asked that any fixtures known prior to the League AGM’s are sent to him for early entry in the diary.

The donated club cleaner

CA was disgusted to see the club cleaner being used as a waste bin. It was donated by the late Jackie Lee. Maybe it’s in the wrong place and suggested it could be re-sited by the starters hut.

BB mentioned that the last time he used it, the brushers felt worn and needed replacing.

GO summed up the discussion by suggesting that re-siting the club cleaner closer to the starters hut seemed a sensible idea and also replacing the brushes if possible. The proposal will be presented atthe next Main Committee meeting.

How-did-I-do Stableford reports

BB: I played a Stableford competition the other week and wondered why the ladies Competition result appearedon the How-did-I-do website and the men’s result, which was played thesame day, wasn’t. It would help to see if there was any handicap change for the next day. I have mentioned it to CW, who said that sometimes it does get a bit delayed being reported to their website, hopefully it will improve.

ACTION: CLOSED

Greenkeepers!

AF asked GO toreport the following to the Main Committee at their next meeting: “I like it to be said, I am one of the worst critics of our greens, but over the last few weeks or more, the greens have been brilliant. Whatever the green staff has been doing to them, it’s working”

GO: I agree, it’s been a pleasure to play on them and they are noticeably faster.

PH: I spent several minutes repairing pitch marks on the greens today.

GO said it’s very frustrating, but we’ll never get rid of the problem. He also thanked AF for those kind comments.
