1. Who will enter and sit down in the kingdom of God? (13,22-30)

: «Lord, will they be fewthose who will be saved

: 24«Strive toenterthrough the narrow door,

- For many, I say to you,

and will close the door,

+ then you willbeginto standoutside

and to knock at the doorsaying:

- “Lord,open to us!’

= and answering,he will say to you:

=‘I do not know where you are from!”

+ 26 then you beginto say:

- “[Lord,] we ate in front of you and we drank

- and in our street you taught”,

= 27 and he will say to you:

=“I say to you,I do not know where you are from.

Get away from me,all you workers of injustice.

+ 28 There will be weeping and grinding of teeth

: when you will seeAbraham, Isaac, Jacob and all the prophets

in the kingdom of God

and you thrownoutside.

+ 29 And they will come from East and from West,from the North and the South

–to recline at tablein the kingdom of God.

= 30 And behold:there are last

who will be the first

= and there are first

who will be the last».

2. Jesus will go all the way (13,31–14,6)

31 At that very hour, (they) came to him some pharisees saying to him:

+ «Go away and departfrom here

– for Herod wants to kill you».

32 He said to them:

«Having come, tell that fox:

“Behold I throwoutside demons

and I perform healings today and tomorrow

and on the third day I am at the end!”

------

+ 33But it is necessary for today, tomorrow and the day following to depart

– for it cannot be that a prophetshould perish outside Jerusalem.

34Jerusalem,

= and lapidate those who are sent to you,
+ how many times I wanted

+ and you were not willing.

+ 14,1It happened, as he went into the house of one of the rulers of the pharisees on the Sabbath,

. to eat bread,

. that they were (there)watching closely to him.

+ 2 And behold there was a dropsical man before him.

. 3 Answering, Jesus spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees:

= «Can we, on the Sabbath,

cure or not?»

+ 4 They were silent.

Having taken him,

hehealed him

and he let him go.

. 5 He said to them:

= «Who among you, if his son or his ox falls into a well,

would not immediatelypull him out on the Sabbath day?»

+ 6 They could not reply to these things.

3. The first will be last and the last first (13,22–14,6)

23 Someone saidto him:

*** «Lord, will they be few those who will be saved?»

He said to them: 24«Strive to enter through the narrow door, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be able. 25After the master of the house will rise and will close the door, then you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door saying: ‘Lord, open to us’ and he will answer and say to you: ‘I do not know where you are from!’ 26Then you will begin to say: ‘Lord, We ate and drank in your presence and you taught in our streets’, 27 and he will say to you: ‘I tell you, I do not know where you are from.

Get awayfrom me, all you workers of injustice.’

28 There will be weeping and grinding of teeth when you will see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob all the prophets in the kingdom of God and you thrown outside. 29 And they will come from East and from West, from the North and the South, to recline at tablein the kingdom of God.

30 And behold:there are last who will be the first

and there are first who will be the last.»

31At that very hour some Pharisees come and said to him: «Go outside and depart from here for Herod wants to kill you.»32 He said to them: «Having come, tell that fox: ‘Behold I throw outside demons and I perform healings today and tomorrow and on the third day I am at the end!’33 But it is necessary for today, tomorrow and the day following to depart for it cannot be that a prophet should perish outside Jerusalem.

34Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill your prophets and lapidate those who are sent to you, how many times I wanted to gather your children as a hen gathers her chicks and you were not willing.

I say to you, you will not see me until you say:

‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord’!»

14,1 And it happened, as he went into thehouse of a ruler of the Pharisees, on the Sabbath, to eat bread, that they were there, observing him. 2And behold, there was a dropsical man before him. 3 Answering, Jesus spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees: «Can we cure on the Sabbath, or not?»4 They were silent. Having taken him, he healed him and let him go. 5He said to them:

*** «Who among you, if his son or his ox falls into a well,

would not immediately pull him outon the Sabbath day?»......

6 And they could notreplyto these things.

B. The parable of the guests and the host (14,7-14)

. 7 He saidto those who were invited a parable

noticing how they were choosing thebest places

.sayingto them:

:: 8 «whenyou are invited by someone to a wedding feast,

do not sit down in thebest place

: lestsomeone more worthy than you may be invited by him

: 9and coming he that invited you and hesay to you:

..“Givethis man place.”

= Then you will begin with shame to take thelowest place.

:: 10Butwhenyou are invited,

+ going sit down in thelowest place

: so thatcoming

:he who invited yousay to you:

.. “Friend, move up higher.”

= Then there will be for you glory in the presence of all the guests.

11 For whoeverexalts himselfwill be humbled

andwhohumbles himselfwill be exalted

. 12 And he said also to the one who has invited him:

:: «whenyou givea dinner or a supper,

do not callnor your friends,nor your brothers,

–nor your relatives,nor your rich neighbours,

: lestthey also invite you in return

: and there would be for youa reward-in return.

:: 13 But whena banquetyou give,

+ invitethe poor,the maimed,

+the lame,the blind.

= 14 And blessedyou will be

= because they have not what to give you-in return

= for it will be given to you-in return

= at the resurrectionof the just.»

C. Who will share bread and salt with jesus? (14,15-35)

1. «Who will eat bread in the kingdom of God?» (14,15-24)

15 Having heard this,

someone among the guests said to him:

«Blessed (is) he who will eat breadin the kingdom of God!»

16 He said to him:

+ «A mangave a great supper

+and invited many.

– 17 He senthis servant at supper time

– to say to the guests:

“Come, for everything is now ready.”

+ 18 They all began with one accord tomake excuses.

+ The first said:

“I have boughta field

– and I am forced to go-outand see it;

: I ask you to have meexcused.”

------

+ 19 Another said:

“I have boughtfive yoke of oxen

– and Igoto test them;

: I ask you to have meexcused.”

20Another said: / “I have marrieda wife,
– and therefore I cannotcome.”

. 21 Having come back,

. the servantreported to his Lord these things.

– Then, being angry,

– the master of the housesaid to the servant:

= “Go out, quickly, into the streets and the lanes of the city,

: and the poor, the maimed, the blind, the lame,

- bring-them in here.”

. 22 The servantsaid:

“Lord, it is done what you commanded

and still there is place!”

–23The Lordsaid to the servant:

= “Go out, into the roads and the hedges

- andcompel-them to come-in

: so that my house may be filled.”

24 Indeed I say to you:

None of those men who were invited shall taste my supper.»

2. The disciple will go all the way (14,25-35)

25 Great crowds went with himand, turning around, he said to them:

+ 26 «If anyonecomes to me

. and does not hatehis father and his motherhis wifeand his children

.his brothers and his sistersand evenhis own life

–he cannot be my disciple.

. 27Whoeverdoes not carry his cross

+ and come behind me,

– he cannot be my disciple.

: 28 Which of youintendingto build a tower,

.does not sit down first

. counting the cost

if he has forcompletion?

+ 29 for fear that having laid foundation

and being not ableto go-all-the-way,

all who see it begin to mock him 30 saying:

“This man beganto build

and hewas not able to go all the way!”

: 31 Or whatkinggoing against another one to make war,

.does not sit down first

.considering

if he is able with ten thousand men to meet him

who comes against him with twenty thousand?

+ 32 Otherwise, being this one still far away,

.sending a delegation,

he asks forpeace.

+ 33 Sowhoever ofyou

.does not renounce all that he has,

– he cannot be my disciple.

+ 34Saltis good.

. But if it fades,

.how shall it be seasoned?

– 35 Not for the soil or for the dunghill is it well placed.

– It isthrown away.

He who has ears to hear, let him hear!»

3. Who will share bread and salt with Jesus? (14,15-35)

16 He said to him: «A man gave a great supper and he invited many. 17 He sent his servant at supper time to say to the guests to come for everything was ready. 18 They all began with one accord to make excuses. The first said: ‘I have bought a field and I am forced to go outside and see it; please, have me excused.’19 Another said: ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen and I go to test them; please, have me excused.’20 Another said:

‘I have marrieda wife,and therefore I cannotcome.’

21 Having come back, the servant reported these things to his Lord. Then, being angry, the master of the house said to his servant: ‘Go out, quickly, into the streets and the lanes of the city, and the poor, the maimed, the blind, the lame, bring-them in here.’22The servant said: ‘Lord, it is done what you have commanded and still there is place!’23 The Lord said to his servant: ‘Go out, into the roads and the hedges and compel-them to

come in, so that my housemay becrowded.

24 Indeed I say to you: None of those men who were invited shall tastemy supper.»

25(They) wentwith himgreat crowds

and, turning around, he said to them: 26 «If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. 27Whoever does not carry his cross and come behind me, he cannot be my disciple. 28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first, counting the cost to see if he has enough to finish 29 for fear that having laid foundations and being not able to go all the way, all who see it begin to mock him 30 saying:

‘This man began to buildand he was not ableto go all the way!’

31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first, considering if he is able with ten thousand men to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32 Otherwise, being this one still far away, sending a delegation, he asks for peace. 33So whoever of you does not renounce all that he has, he cannot be my disciple.

34Saltis good; but if it fades, how shall it be seasoned?
