Purpose:InanefforttofurtherstrengthentherelationshipbetweenLehighUniversityandthelocalcommunity,theDepartmentofAthleticsisinvitingadministrators,teachersandstudentsfromlocalareaelementary(grades3-8)andmiddleschoolstothe7thAnnualLehighUniversityEducationDayinconnectionwithourwomen’sbasketballgamevs.Delaware StateUniversity.
Educational Components: Materials will be provided to participating classrooms prior to November 16th game bytheLehigh University Department of Athletics. The educational subject matter will covermath,geography, and art. In addition, the members of the men’s and women’s basketball teams cancome,ifrequestedtotheparticipatingschoolspriortoNovember 16thandhelpwithP.E.classesbyputtingon a skills clinic. For the math component, Lehigh Men’s and Women’s basketball box scoreswillbeprovidedforthechildrentoteachthemabouthowtoreadandinterpretgamestatistics.
Additionally,teacherscanhaveadiscussionaboutrankingtheplayersbasedondifferentstatisticalcategories (i.e. points scored, rebounds, turnovers, etc.), averaging statistics, anddeterminingmean, median, mode, and range. The geography component will look at the 8 collegesanduniversities in the Patriot League—including Lehigh University. A map will be providedandteachers can have a discussion regarding the location of each school and the distance inmilesbetween each of them. State capitals can be another theme in the classroom. Locatingthehometowncitiesandstatesofourteammembersandcoachescanbeanotherclassroomtheme.
With the art component, students will be encouraged to show their Mountain Hawk spiritbymakingsigns,posters,andbannersandbringingthemwiththemtothegameforaspecialcontest.Creativitycounts!
Ongameday,theschoolchildrenwillenjoyaninteractiveeducationalexperiencebyparticipatinginalifeskillssessionwheretheywilllearnaboutteambuilding,exercise,nutrition,andpositiveattitudestowardlearning.
