CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme Factsheet
The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme is a new energy emissions trading scheme for the UK starting in April 2010 that organisations using a certain amount of electricity must take part in. It is an important part of the UK’s strategy for improving business energy efficiency and reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
The CRC will save organisations money by improving their energy efficiency. Private and public sector organisations are part of the Scheme. It’s designed to help businesses manage their energy use more effectively and to help the UK meet the 2050 Climate Change Act target which is that Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) will be at least 80% lower than in 1990.
Organisations that qualify for the CRC will need to register their involvement between 1st April 2010 – 30th September 2010.
Who qualifies for the Scheme?
Any organisation that in the calendar year 2008:
· had at least one meter that measures energy use in half-hourly units, where the energy use was paid for on a half-hourly basis. If yes you will need to be a full participant or make an information disclosure.
· used at least 6,000 megawatts (MWh) of electricity. If yes you will be a full participant and need to register between 1st April 2010 – 30th September 2010.
Who doesn’t qualify but still needs to take action?
Any organisation that in the calendar year 2008:
· used more than 3000 MWh but less than 6,000 MWh of electricity then you will have to provide the Environment Agency with details of your full energy consumption of half hourly electricity for the year 2008. This is an information disclosure.
· used less electricity than 3,000 MWh. Your organisation must make a simple ‘tick box’ declaration via the Environment Agency CRC website.
