Jacobean Crewel Embroidery

Who is the course for?

Do you have a passion for hand embroidery and want to learn more with like minded people? Then why not sign up for this course of self indulgence.

How is the course organised?

The course is suitable for all levels of students from beginners to the more experienced and each student will be guided individually by their tutor Angie Burt.

Over the year you will learn all about the art of Jacobean Embroidery, from traditional methods, right through to modern interpretation.

You will study:

Term 1: -Here we will start to use all the traditional equipment starting with ‘slate frames’ and proceeding to produce a wonderful sampler that will include a veritable feast of stitches and colour combinations to use in all your embroideries in the future.

Each fortnight you will learn new stitches, techniques andcolour combinations that can be achieved with crewel wool and a needle

Term 2:- Here we will start to look into the Historical Imagery for Crewel Embroidery to help us design our own traditional ‘Tree of Life’. We will then explore stitch plans for our design and colour combinations before finally starting to create our embroidery. We will also learn how to lace and mount our work professionally.

Term 3:- Here you will use all of your knowledge and start to produce a new piece of embroidery that will reflect your own personality. You may want to keep it traditional and produce your own footstool, fire screen or picture for your home; or you may want to go very modern in your design and produce a contemporary piece that reflects you as a person or something that you are passionate about!
