Whitney Point Cross-Country

I hope that everyone has had an active and fun summer. Hopefully you enjoyed yourself biking, hiking, swimming, and of course RUNNING. Now it is time to think about our fall season. Ready or not get ready to run.

·  Practice- Will start Monday, August 14th for the varsity and August 21st for the modified. Make sure you have a physical. If you do not UHS will be offering physicals at the High School on Wednesday, August 9th at 9:00 a.m at the High School nurse’s office. If you do not have a physical you cannot practice. See practice schedule included for exact times and dates.

·  Training- Your goal is to be able to run 3.1 miles for varsity and 1.5 mile modified. These are the lengths of a X-C course. We will slowly progress to this distance by running and playing games each day at practice. Don’t worry you will all be able to do this!

·  Attire- It is important that you pay attention to the weather each day. We will practice rain or shine. Some things you might want in your lockers: shorts, t-shirt, athletic pants, sweatshirt or jacket, extra socks and a water bottle.

·  Sneakers- To prevent injuries it is important that you have running sneakers. You can purchase a good pair of running sneakers at Dick’s, Kohl’s, Footlocker, or on-line at Eastbay, Amazon, Ebay etc… Do not spend a lot of money. The type of running sneaker you need should be between $50 and $70. Asics, Nike, Brooks, New Balance, Hoka, Adidas and Saucony are good brands to buy.

·  Meets- We will send home a tentative schedule during the first week of practices. Most of the meets will be during the week. We will depart after school getting back usually around 7:00p.m. We will follow the IAC league schedule and attend few invitations due to the team size being small and our limited budget. If you have any conflicts, please let me know ahead of time.

·  Goals- It is important to set personal goals. One of your goals should be to follow the team work-out plan the best you can.

·  If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at school 692-8245 or . Enjoy the rest summer vacation. See You Soon!

Happy Running,

Ms. Hayes

Parental Support

The Key to Your Child’s Peak Performance

Thank you for allowing your child to participate in cross-country running. I hope together we can provide your child will an experience of a lifetime. Here are some suggestions how you can help your child reach his/her peak performance.

·  Be Your Child’s Best Fan: Support your child no matter how he/she performs.

·  Encourage Your Child to Talk to the Coach: If your child is having difficulties in practice or meets, or can’t make a practice, encourage him/her to speak with the coach.

·  Monitor Your Child’s Stress Level: Keep an eye on the runner to make sure that he/she is handling stress effectively from the various activities and responsibilities in his/her life.

·  Monitor Eating and Sleeping Habits: Be sure your child is eating the proper foods and getting adequate rest to help him/her perform academically and athletically.

·  Have Fun: This is what we will be trying to do! We will try to challenge your child to reach past his/her “comfort level” and improve himself/herself as a runner, and thus, a person. We will attempt to do this in environments that are fun yet challenging.

·  Meeting-Required Parent meeting with the Coach on Tuesday, August 15th at 6:00 pm in the High School Auditorium.

I appreciate your job as parents. I hope you can help me provide your child with a positive learning experience. If I can assist you in any way or answer any questions you might have please feel free to contact me at school: 692-8245 or

Sincerely,

Whitney Point Athletic Director
