Ways Busy Parents Can Help Their Children Succeed in School

Researchers were recently surprised to learn that when people were asked if they wanted more money or more time, most people answered, “more time.” With parents already feeling so busy that they hardly have time to sit down for a meal, how can they find the time to help their children succeed in school?

Luckily, many busy parents have figured out ways to find the time for the important job of helping their children learn. Here are five excellent ways to help your child succeed in school:

  1. Use the time in the car to do school work: Turn off the radio and use driving time to learn math facts, spelling words or practice vocabulary words. Ten minutes here and 15 minutes there can add up to a lot of practice time while traveling in the car.
  2. Exchange notes with your child: Here is a great way to keep open lines of communication and develop writing skills at the same time. Whenever you have a few moments throughout the day, write a short letter to your child. You may write about what you are doing at work, what upcoming plans you have together, or jobs you would like them to do. Ask them questions, too, so they can respond back to you. Exchange notes on a daily basis and watch their writing skills improve.
  3. Set priorities: Decide what is most important to you – odds are it is your kids! Then, consciously decide the most important way to spend your time. Is it more important to cook a fancy dinner or spend time enjoying a book with your child? Order a pizza and read the book, your kids will love you for it.
  4. Spend one-on-one time: Kids need quality time. There is nothing like spending time alone with a parent to make a child feel special. Every week, make an appointment to spend some one-on-one time with each of your children. Then, treat the appointment as seriously as you would an important business meeting.
  5. Find your child’s “prime time” for studying: Find the best time for your child to study each night and schedule it in your calendar. This time might be right after school or 7:00 at night. It might even vary night-to-night because of other activities. The most important thing is to hold “prime time” study time each night.

Busy lives sometimes make it tough to find time for schoolwork, but always keep in perspective what really matters. Almost everyone makes a living based on their education, not on their extra curricular activities – so remember what really matters in the long run is their education – so let’s make it a priority.

Your partner in education,

Mr. Guertal

NEW PHONE SYSTEM:

As many of you have experienced, we have a new phone system with automated answering. When you call the school, you will be prompted to choose the option for the attendance office, if you are reporting your child off school, or the option for the office if you need to speak to someone. You also have the option to leave a voicemail for a staff member by accessing the directory for their extension. So far, this system seems to be working well. The office is receiving the messages from parents reporting their child off school (with a few minor glitches). We would like to ask that when you report your child off, please state your child’s name, reason for missing school and their teacher’s name. Thanks for your cooperation.

Also, you may call the cafeteria by entering Mrs. Baughman’s extension – 9300 - to reserve a lunch or check your child’s lunch account balance.

NO ELECTRONIC DEVICES AT SCHOOL

Due to problems we are having in school with IPods, DS Systems, cell phones and other electronic devices, students are to leave these devices at home. They are not permitted to have them on school property including the buses. If parents want their son/daughter to carry a cell phone for emergency purposes, then it needs to be turned off and in their book bag when they get on the bus and it is to remain in their book bag until they get off the bus at the end of the day. If students are caught with electronic devices at school, they will be taken away. Cell phones that are not turned off in school will be taken away and have to be picked up by the student’s parents. Thank you for your cooperation with this matter.

SECURITY REMINDER TO PARENTS/VISITORS

Any time you come into our school, you must first stop in the office, sign in on our visitor’s log and obtain a visitor’s badge. Pleasedo notgo directly to the classroom. For security reasons, we need to know who is in our school at all times, and they must have a visitor’s badge on. Also, remember to sign out when you leave the building. Our school is securely locked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the protection of the children.

Also, if you encounter someone coming to the front door to come in as you are leaving, please do not let them in. They must ring the doorbell and state their business before they are permitted in the building. Thanks for your cooperation in helping to keep our students and staff safe.

STUDENT ABSENCES

Please remember to call the school attendance extension to report your child absent when they are sick. If you would like their work sent home, please request so at the time you report them off as that will give the teacher time to gather their work throughout the day. Also, per State regulations, a signed note must be sent into school stating the reason the student was not in attendance. If the student was at a doctor’s appointment, please get a note from the doctor’s office to excuse their absence. Thank you for your cooperation.

MARKET DAY

Market Day pick up is February 25th. Be sure to have your orders in by February 20th.

Please call with any questions or to place your order. Thanks for your support!

STUDENT OF THE WEEK

In order to give special recognition to all of our students, each week teachers have the opportunity to select a "student of the week". These students are then given special recognition and privileges that go along with this honor. During the month of January, the following students were selected:

Brooklyn Moore, Morgan Jones, Reaghan Lee, Dayton Ferencik, Aidan Mallet, Tori Leali, Michael Pipo, Bryson Cadwell, Alex Henne, Zane Fiedler, Lauren Killian, William Hughes, Clayton McKrill, Marley Ward, Sophia Minor, Polly Gorodilina, Joshu Smith, Aubrey Miller, Aubrey Kreitzer, Brooke Snyder, Molly Hodge, Kendal Morris, and Donald Eakle.

VALENTINE PARTY

On Friday, February 15, our school will be having its annual Valentine Party. If you are planning on helping with the party as a room parent, you must contact your head room parent and reserve a place. All room parents will be required to wear guest name tags to help with building security. These name tags will be available in the cafeteria between 2:15 and 2:30 p.m. The party will begin at 2:35 and conclude at 3:15 p.m. Please park out of the bus route (around back on the blacktop is fine) and report to door #1 and sign in on the sheets in the cafeteria. At 2:30, the room parents can then go as a group to the classroom. There will not be any babysitting available for this party, so please leave younger siblings at home. Thank you for your help and cooperation on this busy day.
