R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, The Volunteer Services Council for Rio Grande State Center will pay tribute on May 21, 1993, to the many fine men and women who generously donate their time and talent to the individuals served by that facility; and

WHEREAS, These tireless volunteers fill a variety of roles, and while acting as patient advocates, direct care assistants, store clerks, and even dance instructors, they bring joy and friendship to the many people whom they serve; and

WHEREAS, The Rio Grande State Center, under the auspices of the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation, provides both residential and outpatient treatment for mentally retarded and mentally ill individuals, and its wide range of treatment, habilitative, and support services has been greatly enhanced by the dedication of these volunteers; and

WHEREAS, It is their selfless work that enables the Rio Grande State Center to maintain the highest standards of care for the people of Harlingen and throughout South Texas; among these 200 volunteers are 39 men and women who together have performed more than 60,000 hours of service to the school, and those admirable individuals will receive special acknowledgement at the Volunteer Services Council Distinguished Awards and Recognition Banquet; and

WHEREAS, Those who will be individually honored are Wayne Potter, Butch Martin, Dora Castillo, Fred Johnson, Helen Johnson, Andrea Gonzalez, Les Miller, Alonzo Valadez, Claude Parman, John Shute, Joe Jaime, Abby Gonzalez, James Parker, Pattie Segel, Coni Diedrich, Josefina Gonzalez, Maria C. Garcia, Eva Senk, Richard Burst, Mary Critchett, Becky Tresnicky, Christina Garcia, Judy Burst, Caroline Beard, Blas Ortiz, Jr., Charles Palmer, Rachel Palmer, Diana Moya, Angelica Oviedo, Martha Hull, Stacey Gallagher, James Oliver, Ken Jenkins, Rick Lopez, Mary Loges, Tom Segel, Sherwood Hamilton, Roland Welch, and Mary Uribe; and

WHEREAS, Through their compassionate and enthusiastic efforts, these people have made a real and lasting difference in the lives of numerous clients of the Rio Grande State Center; their work serves as a reminder to all Texans that a few committed individuals can have a powerful impact on their community and state, and in doing this they have earned the respect and gratitude of all the members of this chamber; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas Legislature hereby commend the members of the Volunteer Services Council for Rio Grande State Center for their dedication and outstanding service and extend to them warmest best wishes for many more years of continued success; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the Volunteer Services Council for Rio Grande State Center as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
