WHEREAS:Democracy is the foundation of our society and in order for democracy to flourish, people must be able to communicate ideas, share opinions and get information; and
WHEREAS:A healthy, democratic society is founded on engaged, informed and included citizenry; and
WHEREAS:Public, Educational and Governmental (PEG) media centers provide people with access to electronic communications training, equipment, facilities and delivery systems and encourage civic dialogue and participation and teach literacy; and
WHEREAS:Public, Educational and Governmental (PEG) media centers serve their communities' needs and promote media democracy for all people regardless of their life circumstances, their political or religious beliefs or their ability to pay; now therefore be it
RESOLVED:That the City of Cambridge proclaims March 18th through 24th as Media Democracy Week in honor of Cambridge Community Television and its contribution to the citizens of Cambridge and further supports the efforts of Cambridge Community Television in its activities during this week as it seeks to educate the community on the important role of media democracy in the perpetuation of liberty and freedom.

WHEREAS:Save A Life Foundation’s mission is to heighten public awareness and train individuals in basic life saving techniques for emergency situations; and
WHEREAS:The administration of basic life saving techniques, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automatic external defibrillation (AED), helps to maintain life until professionals arrive, thus significantly reducing deaths and disabling injuries; and
WHEREAS:In concert with Fire/Police/Emergency Medical Services Professionals, Save A Life Foundation institutes the training of basic life saving first aid techniques to school age children and adults; now therefore be it

WHEREAS:While Cambridge Cares About AIDS continues to provide case management, housing and prevention education, currently some new programs include harm reduction, vocational counseling and employment, medication reclamation for Haiti and Youth on Fire, Cambridge Cares About AIDS program for homeless, runaway and throwaway youths; and

COUNCILLOR DECKER
WHEREAS:March is designated as Cambridge Women's History month to coincide with National Women's History Month; and
WHEREAS:Cambridge women of every race, class, and ethnicity and of every era of history have played and continue to play a critical economic, cultural, and social role in every sphere of the life of the City, Commonwealth, and Nation; and
WHEREAS:Cambridge women have been leaders, not only in their rights of suffrage and equal opportunity, but also in the abolitionist movement, the emancipation movement, the industrial safety movement, the civil rights movement, and other progressive movements, which create a more fair and just society; and
WHEREAS:Despite their many contributions, the role of American women in history has been consistently overlooked and undervalued; and
WHEREAS:The Cambridge Women's Heritage Project, through on-going programs, initiatives and research is working to recognize the remarkable and ordinary women of Cambridge and their contributions, both past and present; and
WHEREAS:The Heritage Project has singled out for special recognition in 2001 the life and legacy of Cantabrigian Florence Luscomb, a life-long socialist, suffragist and political activist; and
WHEREAS:Ms. Luscomb was born in Lowell on February 6, 1887 and graduated from MIT in 1909, working in architecture until World War I, when she became executive secretary for the Boston Equal Suffrage Association and became famous for her open-air speeches. In 1915, she successfully pressured the Massachusetts Legislature to ratify a Federal Amendment on suffrage by canvassing for a quota of signatures of women equal to that of a majority for all male voters; and
WHEREAS:Florence was also known for her affiliations with the Massachusetts Civil League (concerned with prison reform), the Joint Board of Sanitary Control (policy factory safety), the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts, the American League for Peace and Democracy; and
