Thanksgiving: Thank you to everyone that has made 2010 such an exciting and successful year for Weymouth Recreation. As the holidays approach we hope you will take some time to relax and enjoy everyone that has added joy to your life. Our wish, as we reflect on 2010, is that we hear from you more often in 2011 with ideas on how to relax more, stress less, learn something new or just stretch your boudaries in a new and enjoyable way! Have a great Thanksgiving and we hope to see you soon!
Big changes after January 7th – New cancellation / discount formular!!! Any program that starts after the January 7, 2011 flyer will be subject to our new cancellation and discount formular. The new formular will move the discount and cancellation date from two weeks before the program starts to two weeks after the flyer is released. This is a huge change but one that will allow us to make better use of our facilities and staff and to focus less on administration and more on program development. We also hope it encourages you, our valued customers, to tune in to the new flyers as they are released and commit early to programs that pique your interest.

May 6th, June 3rd, July 1st, August 5th, September 2nd, October 7th, November 4th and December 2nd.

Summer Feedback Survey – Thanks to those that took part in our summer feedback survey. Your input was welcome and will be used to improve the programs. Please feel free to reinforce issues that you feel are very important. It is never to early to help us with monthly or summer program ideas - as we start on next years summer book very soon!

Sprouts “Floor” Sports (4-6)

The goal of this program is to introduce children to specific sports and/or related activities through a three week mini-format. Floor hockey, using soft and safe foam polo equipment, will be the emphasis of this session. All equipment is provided. “Fun”damentals and social interaction are developed as the participants are introduced to sports play groups.

Introducing floor hockey during the winter months in an intramural format, gives the players a venue to both play and keep active during those long winter months. Our hope is as interest and participation increases we can grow it into a winter league program on either Friday, Saturday or Sunday evenings. Mouth guards are recommended and are the responsibility of the
participants. All other equipment is provided, but players are welcome to bring their own sticks and gear.
Underdog Dodgeball (8-10 +)

Get out of the cold, and into the red-hot action- as “underdog dodgeball” makes its debut in this three (3) week mini-series.
A great way to have fun and stay active with your friends, playing this ever popular, fast paced and high energy game.
This is our first offering during this Saturday night time frame as the winter season quickly approaches. In the coming months, programming for this age group (“Tweeners”) will range from single day in nature to consecutive weekly classes. Have a comment or program idea? This program is to introduce the beginner to tennis. Our staff has attended the USTA recreational tennis workshop that stresses and teaches the Quick Start format. What this means is that the philosophy in place is to learn to play verses standing in line drills. The goal is to get youngsters onto the tennis court, rallying and playing as quickly as possible. This is accomplished through the use of adaptive equipment that meets the needs and ages of the participants. All equipment, including racquets, is provided during the class.

Bay State Skating School

Beginner, advanced & intermediate skills are taught by professional instructors. The lessons will be 25 minutes, followed by 25 minutes of practice time. Only registered skaters are allowed on the ice. Skaters must have sharpened figure or hockey skates. Skating helmets are mandatory for students ages 4 ½ to 9 and recommended for everyone. Mittens or gloves are recommended. This is not a drop-off class.

Fun, Fun, Fun! Come for a few hours, stay all day or commit to the whole week. Stay on site or step out to try one of the age appropriate “On the Go”activities.”On the GO” activities require an additional , separate, registration at a cost of $2.00. The Wey-Fun Christmas Break Program promises to be a great way to spend some of your child’s vacation. The activities on site schedule is just a guide of what will be offered to participants in the way of fun, discovery, and challenges. This schedule will be posted, along with our off-site electives, in our next flyer that will be released on Friday December 3, 2010.

Ideal for the beginner or intermediate level; taught by Suzanne DiGiammo, the Chief Instructor of East Coast Martial Arts Academy in South Weymouth. Students will learn self- defense techniques, while developing confidence and concentration in a safe and fun environment.

Skiing & Snowboard Lessons (7 – 15)

The Blue Hills Snow Sports Junior Program offers a five week skiing or snowboarding
experience for ages 7 – 15 year olds. It’s available for
skier /riders of all abilities
from beginner to advanced. The ski rentals, a lift
ticket, and a 1.5 hour lesson are heavily discounted to create an affordable package specially designed just for Recreation groups. The Recreation Dept. strongly recommends the use of helmets which are optional and available on a limited basis for rental through the Blue Hills Ski Area. Transportation via 15 passenger vans will be provided by our Weymouth Recreation Staff, who will serve as chaperones for the program. The vans will depart the Teen Center at 3:35 p.m. sharp for Blue Hills and will return to the Teen Center at approximately 6:45 pm. (7:15 p.m. the first night).

Ashtanga Yoga is a total health system that helps you to achieve balance of body, mind and spirit for physical and spiritual development. The benefits of yoga include stress reduction, increased flexibility, toning, the stretching and strengthening of muscles and a sense of well-being. This course is designed for beginners as well as for experts. This program meets 8 times, with each class being one hour and 10 minutes in duration, and will be divided into two parts: Part 1 (50 minutes): It will cover the postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), mudras, kriyas, and bandhas. Part 2 (20 minutes): relaxation technique through mantras, guided meditation, visualization.
Participants are asked to wear loose and comfortable clothing and to bring a yoga mat and a small towel. About the instructor: Gauri has more than ten years of experience of teaching yoga for various age groups. She has a very well structured program to teach adults.
