Where are they going?

Chapel Rock is a beautiful camp in the PrescottValley that offers great learning experiences, nice facilities and good food. Students will be housed in cabins with adult chaperones. The cabins have bunk beds and indoor bathrooms. The Aspen Creek Outdoor School offers a variety of outdoor classes dealing with topics such as naturalcycles, energy flow, soil, water, weather, and teamwork skills. In addition, Aspen Creekoffers a social learning experience in which your child will be living and working in a closecommunity atmosphere. You can visit the website to see the facilities at ChapelRock.net.

Who gets to go?

Science Camp is a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn outside of the classroom, experience science in a natural setting, and build teamwork and social skills. Science Camp is a privilege that needs to be earned. Because we want camp to be the best possible experience for all 6th graders and we rely on parent volunteers, students who can’t demonstrate appropriate behavior may not be allowed to attend. Any students who have been suspended (in school or out of school) during this school year will not be permitted to attend.

What are they doing there?

Science camp will include activities that cannot be done in the regular classroom. The

emphasis at Science Camp is on education, not recreation. Students will be completing a Science Journal for a grade at camp! Some of the activities the kids will be participating in are:

-Solarville – understanding the flow of energy through the food chain and the ways energy is used in providing our food

-Cycle Factory – learning about the cycles of air, water, soil and how human actions impact the systems

-Geocaching– students will learn the science behind global positioning systems and do a modern day treasure hunt

-Star party– students will learn aspects of astronomy with direct observations

-Dead to Alive Decomposition–using the inquiry process students will learn about what happens to waste over the course of time and experiment

-Challenge Course– teambuilding, communication, and compromise

-Owl Who– learn about the complexity of the Arizona food web

-Campfire – singing camp songs, hearing stories and making s’mores make true a camp experience that both kids and adults love

How are we paying for all this???

Student tuition to science camp will be $150 per child. This cost covers the transportation, lodging, food, and activities for the 3 days and 2 nights we are at Chapel Rock. This can be paid for either by direct payment (write a check), using tax credit money (make a donation) and/or by participating in our fundraising cookie dough sale (buy some cookies). If you would like to pay at any time during the school year, please feel free butALL PAYMENTS WILL BE DUE NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, MARCH 1, 2013. We would like for every sixth grade student to participate so please let us know what we can do to help make that possible.

Sounds like fun…can I come???

We need adults to participate as chaperones!! The cost for an adult will be $75 and cannot be paid for through tax credit money. These chaperones will also need to be approved through the district which will require filling out a Tier 3 volunteer packet and submitting to fingerprinting and a background check. This is for the safety of all of the children and is an absolute requirement. The process usually takes up to 8 weeks so we are asking for chaperones to plan on doing that as soon as possible. All chaperones must be cleared by December 21, 2012. We will select from approved chaperones once the final number of students has been determined in March. We will notify the chaperones who will be accompanying us on our trip and collect payments from them in mid-March.
