What We Are Learning in Reader’s Workshop!

How do I become a great reader? What is a letter? What is a word? What is a sentence? What is a picture walk? What are the parts of a book? How do I track print? What is an author? What is an illustrator? What is a character? What is the setting? What country do I live in? What are symbols of my country? (American flag, Georgia flag, the bald eagle)

Theme: My World (My Country)

Phonics:

Letter of the Week - Ff (beginning and ending sounds)

Vowel of the Week- a (short vowel/medial sound)

Phonological Awareness Skill: listening for rhyme

Reading strategies:

*use “reading finger” to track print (point to words as they are being read/ one to one correspondence)

*read left to right

*notice that the pictures match the words

*picture walk helps us make predictions about what we read

*recognizing rhyming words

Names:

Please make sure your child is writing his/her first name correctly. It should begin with an uppercase letter followed by lowercase letters. If your child can successfully write his/her first name, please begin working on his/her last name.* Writing first names is a pre-school skill- please practice at home, if your child is struggling with this task.

Important Terms: letter, word, sentence, front cover, back cover, title page, author, illustrator, prediction, track print, rhyming, word family, story sequence, character, setting

How do I become a great writer? What is narrative writing?

We will be learning how to become a great writer. We will be writing about how we can be a respectful, responsible role model.

WHAT WE ARE LEARNING IN MATH!

What are 2D shapes? How do I sort? How do I analyze shapes? How do I show numbers and groups? What are positional words? How do I write numbers? How do I count to 50?

We will be discussing 2 dimensional shapes (square, circle, hexagon, triangle and rectangle).

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

*Please sign & return all forms.

*Please send daily folder back to school each day.

*Please read each night with your child and send the reading log to school.

*Please inform us of any transportation changes in writing (if it involves a bus that your child rides infrequently, please include address)

*Please send in snack for you child, each day.

*We’d love for you to join us for lunch at 10:25-10:55! Please sign in at the front office and meet us in the cafeteria.

*Please teach your child to tie his/her shoelaces. Please double-knot your child’s shoes prior to sending him/her to school.

*Birthdays: We want to recognize your child’s special day! We always sing and provide your child with a birthday crown. Due to CCSD policy, we are not permitted to have a party. We can have a “special snack”. If you would like to send in a snack for your child’s birthday, please contact us to set up a time. We would appreciate no cakes being sent to school. Cookies, brownies, etc. work best.

*If your child has a food allergy, please contact the cafeteria. It is very important that the cafeteria has all information regarding food allergies. Thanks!

PLEASE COMPLETE YOUR CHILD’S TRANSPORTATION FORM, ON A DAILY BASIS. IF WE DO NOT KNOW HOW YOUR CHILD IS GOING HOME, HE/SHE WILL BE SENT TO ASP (AT A COST TO PARENT). YOUR CHILD’S SAFETY IS OUR PRIMARY CONCERN. THANK YOU SO MUCH! J
