What’s been Happening, New Ideas and other matters

U3A National Officeproduces a magazine “Third Age Matters” 5 times a year which has to be posted directly to members. It contains information about U3A’s nationwide, study breaks and helpful contacts. They produce a “Sources” supplement with details for potential activity groups. The annual cost for the magazine and sources is £2.50 to cover postage. If you want to try “Third Age Matters” let one of the committee know. The September issue deadline closes on the 17th August, if you want to register or discontinue your subscription let Lorna Rothwell know as soon as you can.

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines offer many cruises some from Liverpool and if you are interested contact them through your travel agent or on 0800 0355 110, quote code “U3ACRO10” for an extra 10% off. Reduced rate if combined with Oceans discount.

Many of you have interests outside the U3A which may be of interest to U3A members. The newsletter is enhanced by the addition of items of local interest. However, it is up to you to tell us if you want items included. Please do not ask for events that occur before the next Monday meeting.

How GDPR (General Data Protection Regulations) affects Crosby U3A? Crosby U3A does not share member details with any third party including National U3A and only holds your name, address, telephone number and in some cases your email address. These are used solely within Crosby U3A to administer trips, groups and to allow the U3A to contact members. It is only if you want subscribe to “Third Age matters” that your name and address are forwarded to the mailing house responsible for posting the magazine to you, they are not given your phone number of email address.

A GARDEN VISIT

On Tuesday 26th June a sunny summer afternoon, a perfectly lovely English garden and delicious cakes and tea on the lawn were all enjoyed by 19 U3A members on their visit to BrocklebankRoadGarden, Southport. As they strolled around and admired the well cared for garden our interest was held at every turn by the many items collected from Southport and surrounding district. From a humble air brick to old railings from Southport’s pier, ancient doors, stained glass.windows and gamekeeper’s sinks led the group on a trail through recent history. The monster carp – nearly 3ft long and the beady eyed blackbird, sitting patiently on her nest and waiting for the visitors to depart and leave her peaceful in the garden, all added interest. Many thanks go to Lorna for arranging the trip and to Mr. and Mrs Sidebotham for allowing the visit to their delightful garden.

The Newsletter / Web editor is conscious of the fact that too many skills are concentrated in too few hands, this could leave the U3A without cover If you know MS-word or Xcel you can pick up the U3A site builder easily then if anything happens Crosby U3A can carry on – a plea for more involvement from Gordon Eve-Tatham and other committee members.

Annual General Meeting Matters

The July meeting is our AGM when the new committee and officers will be appointed. The present committee has been in place for several years, some beyond the term allowed in the constitution. Crosby U3A needs involvement from the wider membership to allow longer serving committee members to step down. A number of the present committee members have personal and health reasons for wishing to stand down though none of them want to leave the U3A without cover.

Current officers can be re-appointed or replaced as the membership wishes. You have the opportunity to simply be on the committee or take on one of the following roles: Chair Person, Vice Chair Person, Treasurer, Membership Secretary, Minutes Secretary, Speaker booking, Newsletter Editor, Website Editor, Catering Secretary, Outing Planning. Some of these functions can be shared and fulfilled by members who are not on the committee.
