What is Virtual Enterprise?

Frequently Asked Questions

Who should enroll in the Virtual Enterprise course?

Anyone who wants to try out a possible business career should think about enrolling in the Virtual Enterprise course at Monterey Trail High School. Ideal candidates are students who are either planning to major in Business in college, or who plan to open a business someday. Students will apply for and interview for their positions early in the year.

Are there any special requirements to enroll in the Virtual Enterprise ROP course?

To be eligible for an ROP course, you must be at least 15 years old, and fill out some paperwork, which can be obtained from Ms. Rieger in HG3, or your counselor. You must also have completed Computer Technology in high school and received a C or better.

How many terms is the course and what period is it offered?

Virtual Enterprise is a 4-term class offered during 5th period. You must check with your counselor to make sure that you do not have any conflicts and that you have enough room in your schedule to enroll in this program.

How do I know if I have room in my schedule to take this course?

Part of the application process is to make an appointment to see your counselor to ensure that you have met all grade level requirements and have room in your schedule for the 4 terms.

Do I have to sign up for all 4 terms in order to participate in the class?

Yes. Because you will hold a position within the company, you will receive special training early in the year to do your job, so it would be difficult to retrain someone else to do your job later in the year.

Do I get paid for my position in the virtual company?

You will not receive real pay, but you will receive a virtual salary, which you will use to pay virtual bills. You will also be able to make virtual purchases from other virtual enterprises across the country after you have paid your required bills. Paying monthly and weekly bills will help you prepare for your future as you leave high school and enter the “real world.”

What other benefits are there to being a part of the Virtual Enterprise class?

As a part of the Virtual Enterprise program, you will also have the opportunity to work with real business partners, and travel to several trade fairs where you will compete with other virtual enterprises throughout California, and as far away as New York. You will also get to know your “coworkers” very well and develop life-long friendships and connections.

What should I do if I want to enroll in the Virtual Enterprise course?

You should contact your counselor or contact Ms. Rieger in HG3 for more information. You can also start by asking your teacher for a Program Application and return it to your counselor or to Ms. Rieger. Then, you will be given an ROP Enrollment Form, which will ensure your spot in the program.

Is there a limit to how many students can enroll?

Yes. The limit is 30 students. To ensure your spot in the program, you should get your Program Application and ROP Enrollment Form in as soon as possible. Enrollment is on a “first come, first served basis,” and you will not be enrolled in the program until both of these forms have been processed.
