What Effect Did the Civil War and Reconstruction Have on Indians?

Note: This lesson includes a longer Writing Assignment than usual.

Content Standard 1: The student will describe the state’s geography and the historic foundations laid by Native American, European, and American cultures.

1.4Compare and contrast cultural perspectives of Native Americans and European Americans regarding land ownership and trading practices.

Content Standard 2: The student will evaluate the major political and economic events that transformed the land and its people prior to statehood.

2.4 Summarize the impact of the Civil War and Reconstruction Treaties on Native American peoples, territories, and tribal sovereignty including the

a)Required enrollment of the Freedmen,

b)Second Indian Removal and the role of the Buffalo Soldiers,

c)Significance of the Massacre at the Washita,

d)Reasons for the reservation system, and

e)Establishment of the western military posts of Fort Sill, Fort Supply, and Fort Reno.

Day 1: Announce the workbook Writing Assignment on page 18, comparing it to a History Channel documentary or a YouTube independent film.ShowPower Point slides from CD or go over the vocabulary in the workbook.Scan the chapter. Read pages 112 through most of page 116.

Discuss questions 1-5 from end of chapter.

Assigndefinitions onworkbook page 17. Brainstorm about this week’s Writing Assignment (the documentary) and how to collaborate on it.

Day 2: Show PP slides of Pushmataha, Tecumseh, and others for this chapter.Read from bottom of page 116 to the middle of page 120.

Discuss questions 6 and 7 from end of chapter.

Assignworkbook section II, or use it tomorrow for review. Students work individually on their documentaries.

Day 3: Point out Spotlight on Stand Watie, on page 73, as optional.Read pages 120-124.

Discuss questions 8-10 from end of chapter.

Assignworkbook page 18. Students collaborate on documentaries and revise drafts.

Day 4: Students present their documentaries to classmates. Review in class for the chapter test, or assign review for homework.

Day 5: Administer chapter test. Finish student “documentaries.” Then assign optional activities or begin next chapter.

Optional activities: Add major events to classroom timeline.Unscramble the Names. Spotlight readings are Men of Peace and The African-American Experience. A Spotlight on Stand Watie starts on page 73.
