Homework

Homework assignments will begin on Monday. Below is a description of our class homework policy. The information included will hopefully make it easier for you to help your child complete his or her assignments each night.

What does it look like?

Each student will bring home an eight-pocket folder (supplied by the school). Each pocket in the folder is labeled. Each assignment will be a review of lessons we completed in class that day. Sometimes you will see the same work the students completed in class. It is my feeling continuous practice and repetition will be most beneficial for the students as it will reinforce their skills.

Reading: Page(s) from the Stevenson Reading Workbook. Please read the assignment with your child. Feel free to send back a note letting me know how you feel they read as well as any concerns you may have from listening to the reading. While students read to you, please ask them questions about the story/sentences to improve their comprehension.

Math: Page(s) from the Semple Math Workbook. Sometimes the pages will be the same sheets students completed in class that day. As it is a review, students will most likely be able to complete this assignment independently.

Spelling: Each student will have a spelling list sent home at the beginning of the week. Please help your child to complete each night’s assignment. There will be a spelling test each Friday.

Handwriting: Handwriting assignments will vary. Sometimes there will be pages from the Stevenson Printing Workbook. I will also include some pages from Handwriting without tears. As handwriting improves, I will assign short writing assignments. Students will be asked to write their own sentences about a specific topic. For this type of assignment students are encouraged to try their best with spelling and concentrate mainly on demonstrating their best handwriting skills.

What to do when the assignments come home?

On Mondays, folders will be stuffed with the entire week’s assignments. I ask that you make sure your child is completing only one night’s assignment at a time. I do not want the entire week’s work completed before Friday. The Assignment pocket in the front of the folder will include descriptions of assignments for the whole week.

Each night when an assignment is completed, students should place their finished work in the last pocket of the folder labeled “Finished work to hand in”. Once I have collected their homework and checked it, I will place the pages into the pocket labeled “Finished work to keep at home”. Please remove work from the keep at home pocket each night so the folder does not become too full.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have about the homework program. All of our students have been asking for homework and seem to be excited to be able to work with you at home and show you what they can do!

Thank you for your continued support at home as we begin what I feel will be a successful school year for all of our students!
