St. Michael & St. Francis Bulletin August 1 & 2, 2015 Pastor: Fr. Harry Tully Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

The crowd wanted to know, “What can we do to accomplish the works of God?” (John 6:28). They were looking for a way to do miracles, signs, wonders, and they expected Jesus to prove himself by doing this for them, too. They had just witnessed the multiplication of the loaves, yet it seemed not to impress them! They were asking for yet another “sign.” Jesus directed their attention to the meaning of the miracles: God’s loving faithfulness to them in their need. Manna in the desert and loaves in the wilderness were the signs of Jesus’ gift of himself to us in love.

What Jesus was looking for in these people was an attentive heart. He wanted them to see that God was providing for their needs with love and faithfulness, and had always done so. But the people didn’t get it. They had just witnessed a miracle, and yet they still were asking for “a sign.” What counts as a sign? Do we need to be hit over the head? Every day we witness miracles, and yet we don’t really see them, or believe that they really come from God. Every day we are bread for each other, or someone is bread for us, and yet we do not make the connection! No doubt the people in the desert failed to connect the quail and the manna with their crying out to God for food. God answers our prayers and knows our needs, and sends people to us and us to others, and yet we look for other explanations of these “miracles” in our lives.

BELIEVE!

God’s faithful love is shown all around us, every day. We cry out to God, and yet we often explain away God’s answers to our prayers, looking for something more spectacular than merely what we need or even what we have asked for. We have what we need: the Bread of Life.

Today’s Readings: Exodus 16:2–4, 12–15; Psalm 78:3–4, 23–25, 54; Ephesians 4:17, 20–24; John 6:24–35

Pastor’s Corner

Dear Parishioners,

Jesus reminds us in this weekend's Gospel that He is the Bread of Life. And that is what He offers us with every Mass, Himself, body, blood, soul and divinity under the guise of simple bread and wine. He has offered us this opportunity, that we may be filled with His life giving Spirit, to assure us of His constant presence in our everyday lives, wherever we may be, whatever we may do or say. It is a shame and a great loss to us when don't take what is offered, or we take it with little regard as to who it is that is in our hands or placed on our tongues. It is growing more in the image of the one who offers us himself. We should be eager to receive this precious gift of God, Himself. What He wants to do for us, through us and in us! If you want "REAL LIFE" then as you receive this mystery trust what Jesus says. The world takes on a new clarity you won't believe!

God bless all of you and may He keep up the good work He wishes you to do!

Fr. Tully

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Weekend of August 1-2, 2015 In today’s Gospel we hear Jesus proclaiming that he is “the bread of life.” He then offers an invitation to come to him. For us, the invitation is to live the Eucharistic life in Christ. What does it mean for our parish family to live together in the Eucharist? What does it mean for us to share the Eucharist together, to participate in the “bread of life” together? Does it mean we love each other, support our community of faith, work together? Do we carry each other’s burdens? Celebrate our joys? What are the practical implications of being good stewards of our Eucharistic life together?

Question of the Week

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Theme: Jesus is the Bread of Life..

For a large part of the liturgical year, we devote ourselves to listening to the mystery of Christ in all its aspects unfolded as we seek God’s truth and understanding.

Step 1: Listen to the Word: This is a familiar story. As you hear it proclaimed today what strikes you? What is there in this story that touches your own heart?

Step two: Look into your Life.

Children: Why is Jesus compared to bread? How can his teaching be like food?

Youth &Adults: Jesus is the bread that gives us life. How does believing in Jesus make your liefe

RCIA will begin September 8th. “The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults” is an adult convert program. If you know of any adults who might be considering becoming Catholic, invite them to our program. St. Michael and St. Francis work together with St. Paul and St. Joe Hill on the program. This is also a great opportunity for Catholic Adults (18years or older) to review their faith and/or to prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation. This process is a period of learning as well as discernment about becoming Catholic. We welcome people of all faith traditions to learn more about our Catholic faith and have their questions answered about our practices. Most importantly, we hope that our RCIA process helps those interested to deepen their relationship with Christ and come to know Him through the Catholic Church. Please contact Fr. Tully or Juliann for more information.
