Autumn Term 2017 - NEWSLETTER NO. 4

17 November 2017.

Poppy Appeal

Thank you for supporting the Poppy Appeal. Girls bought poppies and poppy merchandise such as friendship bracelets, wristbands and reflectors, and were very generous. The girls have learnt about the Poppy symbolising remembrance and hope. On Friday we heard the Last Post played on the bugle and observed a minute's silence.

We sent two very heavy collecting boxes back to the Royal British Legion to help the Armed Forces community.

Anti Bullying Week and Superhero Day

This week is Anti-Bullying Week which raises awareness of bullying and encourages children, teachers and parents to take action against bullying throughout the year. The theme this year is 'All different, All equal.'

In PSHE lessons and assemblies we have been empowering the girls to celebrate what makes them, and others, unique. We have been learning how important it is that we all feel valued and included in school and are able to be ourselves. We have dressed as superheroes to be a hero against bullying and also thought about others by bringing a donation for ‘Children in Need’. We will let you know how much we raised in the next newsletter.

Mathletics Numeracy Challenge - Year 2 to Year 6 - 20th to 26th November

As a school, we are taking part in the Mathletics Numeracy Challenge. Please go on Mathletics as many times as you can to collect participation points during this week. We will be competing against schools from the UK, Europe and the Middle East. Mathletics will work out the winning school by taking the total number of participation points and divide it by the total number of students in the school registered to use Mathletics. Therefore, it is important that we all work as a team.

Points are awarded per correct answer:

Tests - 20 points each

Curriculum Activities (Learn) - 10 points each Live Mathletics - 1 point each Live Mathletics bonus level- 2 points each.

Good luck, girls! We can do it!

Illness

If your child has had a stomach upset, we would advise that, in order to control any cross infection, they must be kept away from school for 48 hours from the last episode of diarrhoea and/or vomiting. This is in accordance with the advice from the Health Protection Agency.

Polite reminder - If you child is unwell, please do not bring them to school, even if they want to come. However, if you think your child is well enough to come to school but has had medicine at home in the morning please let school know.

Autumn holiday club

At the start of the week the girls where given a challenge to design and make a Calico Creature. As you can see from the photograph, they all did an amazing job! We finished the week with dressing up, having nails painted, making pizzas for lunch, cakes for desert and plenty of party games. As always, thoroughly enjoyed by all!

YEAR 3

Y3 have been studying the work of the artist Paul Klee. We have enjoyed looking at his abstract works and the way that he used lines and shapes in his paintings. We used pastels for our artwork, which is in the style of Paul Klee.

YEAR 4

4CG have started a new science topic, Electricity. We have designed safety posters for the correct use of electrical items and this week took torches apart to examine the different parts, and to work out how a torch works. We are looking forward to our DT topic, which is linked to electricity and we will be making our own torches.

4SS have been learning to multiply and divide by 10. We learnt to move digits one place to the right when dividing by 10 making the answer smaller. We learnt to move the digits one place to the left when multiplying by 10 making the answer larger. Using a ball as the decimal point, we enjoyed acting this out!

4EB have been investigating electric circuits this week. We were given the task to make a bulb light up and discovered that we needed a complete circuit to do this. We will use this knowledge when we come to make our torch or lighthouse model later in the term.

YEAR 5

In science we have been exploring the different forces around us and how they affect everyday objects by moulding animals out of play dough and discussing, thinking and recording the different forces we used.

We enjoyed making our ‘Christmas bells’ artwork for our Cathedral concert, “The Bells Ring Out”.

Mr. Singh, our Sikh visitor, came in to talk to Year 5 last Tuesday about his religion.

I really enjoyed Mr. Singh's visit. I found out that the main colours for Sikh turbans are blue, white, black and orange” - Emily Dimbylow

“I learned that most Sikh's meditate for at least 2 hours each day”! – Nancy Tidy

In DT, we have explored and evaluated the design and construction of different Christmas stockings.

YEAR 6

In Maths, Year 6 have been investigating what happens when we add and subtract with negative numbers and explaining our findings. Well done, girls, for working methodically and with enthusiasm.

In our PSHE lessons, Year 6 have been finding out what it must be like to live with a disability. Each member of the group were given a different disability and they had to work on a task together. One girl wore a blindfold, another headphones, one girl had one hand behind her back and the final member of the group had to remain seated at all times. They discovered how they would use and develop other skills to complete the task.

ECO-COMMITTEE

The Eco-Committee decided that they would like to plant hyacinth bulbs. We look forward to seeing them bloom in early spring.

Thank-you FOSJH for buying the bulbs and potting compost.

FRENCH

The French sound of the week is ‘i’, pronounced ‘ee’.

Some words with this sound are une giraffe, une pizza, des frites and une livre. Can you remember what these words mean? Can you find any more?

MUSIC

Julian Saphir Inspire Day

This week we were lucky enough to have Julian Saphir, a renowned pianist visit, the Foundation to work with our Foundation pianists and he delighted them with a superb concert.

A total of 36 Junior girls and boys attended the first session, and 8 of our girls were lucky enough to be chosen to play. It was really interesting to hear his comments and I am sure many of the girls have taken away tips on how to improve their pieces.

“I really enjoyed the workshop and concert, because it allowed me to play my music in front of a professional pianist and for him to give me feedback on how to improve. I also enjoyed the concert because it gave me a chance to see what practice can do!” - Yvie Prior-Smith

“The piano workshop I took part in was terrific. I am doing my piano exam in a fortnight and it could not have been any more helpful. If you were nervous at the beginning as soon as you talked to him, you lost all your nerves. He took time helping you improve and I hope my piece will be even better.” - Molly Robinson

Christmas Light Switch on in the Ridings

After our successful performance last year, Year 2 Choir and Mulberry Singers are once again singing as part of Heart FMs Christmas Light Switch on in the Ridings on Saturday. We are due to perform at 12.05 so if anyone is planning a spot of Christmas shopping do pop along and listen to the girls. We are performing just outside Marks and Spencers.

SPORT

Netball

Two Under 9 netball teams played their first match of the season at Westville House School in Ilkley. Both teams put in 100% effort and showed some accurate passing and good teamwork. One team won by 7 goals to 5 and one team lost by 3 goals to 0. All players would benefit from marking their opponent as tightly as they can and by looking over their shoulder to check where she is.

Excellent play from Annabel Massey, Grace Bentley and Isabelle Patrick

The Under 9 team also played in a netball festival at Mylnhurst School in Sheffield. They played matches against Mylnhurst, Sheffield High School and Immaculate Conception Spink Hill Junior School as well as competing in a shooting competition that also included the teachers! They won 3 matches, drew 2 matches and lost one match to finish as runners up. All players would benefit from a little more dynamic jumping into the air to catch a pass, especially if it is a high pass.

Excellent play from Olivia Brown and Eleanor Bridgman

Well played: Grace Bentley, Isabelle Patrick, Amber Barker, Matilda Bowser, Annabelle Massey and Maya Aziz.

Swimming

Shortly girls in Year 5 & 6 will be given the opportunity to attend trials for the school swimming team. To assist you in your decision to allow your daughter to attend these swimming time trials you may like to consider the following points:

  • Your daughter should be a competitive swimmer who trains out of school, can swim breaststroke, backstroke and front crawl and can make an attempt at butterfly.
  • She should be able to swim these strokes at a fast speed over a distance of 50 metres.
  • She will have an advantage if she has achieved the standard to allow her to dive safely off the side of the pool or off starting blocks.
  • She should be able to swim 25 metres, over one length, close to the following times - front crawl 21 seconds, breaststroke 27 seconds, backstroke 24 seconds.
