WGA Setup for Windows

Wireless Gaming Adapter (WGA) Setup for Windows

This guide will take you through the step-by-step setup for the Mad Catz wireless gaming adapter. The setup is more complex than ‘plug and play’ but these detailed steps will get you up and running. Before you begin, you will need to know the following things:

1.  Your WEP security code. This is the password you use when you create your wireless home connection. This code is used to protect the security of your wireless network and can be obtained from your wireless routers’ control panel. If you are unsure about this contact your Internet Service Provider for confirmation.

2.  Your static IP address is most likely to be obtained automatically. However, if you have a fixed IP address, make sure you have it noted down for reference (as the address will be altered for the WGA setup). Once you have completed the setup, your static IP will need to be re-entered in order for your PC to connect to the internet.

Due to some wireless routers do not support the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) method, this guide is concerned with the Web Setup option for the adapter.

Start

1. To start the Installation Guide insert the mini CD supplied with the product. The first page of the setup should look like this. Click the Start button.

2. Follow the on screen instructions for connecting your adapter. You should also connect the supplied Ethernet cable to the back of the adapter and into the Ethernet port on the back of your PC. Click next.

3. At this stage you will need to configure the IP address of your PC. Keep the Installation Guide open whilst configuring your IP address.

Here is how to access the IP address configuration screen on XP, Vista and Windows 7.

XP – Left click Start > Control Panel > Network Connections. Right click Local Area Connection and click properties. Left click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click properties.

Vista – Left click Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Centre > Manage Network Connections. Right click Local Area Connection and select properties. Left click Internet Protocol (TCP/IPv4) and select properties.

Windows 7 – Left click Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Centre > Change adapter settings. Right click Local Area Connection and select properties. Left click Internet Protocol (TCP/IPv4) and select properties.

When you click Properties you will be presented with this window.

The image to the left shows the Local Area Connection (LAN) Properties page for Windows 7. The Windows XP version is exactly the same. Once you have selected the properties for the TCP/IPv4 or TCP/IP entry you can assign your IP address.

Select ‘Use the following IP address’. Input the IP and subnet mask as the installation guide suggests. Your screen should look like the image below. In this example we have used 10 instead of x.

If your IP is not set to obtain automatically, make sure you note down your IP and subnet numbers so you can reassign it after you have configured the WGA.

Once you have changed the IP and Subnet mask, as instructed, click OK, and then click next on the Mad Catz Installation Guide.

4. Check that the 3 LEDs on your adapter are either on, or flashing, then click next.

5. If your router does not support WPS, click the Web Setup option.

6. When you reach this setup screen, clicking the Web Login button will launch the configuration screen for the WGA in Internet Explorer (so have your WEP key ready if you have one!). This will only work in Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer will request a username and password, use the word admin for both, and click ok. This will load the GoAhead Web Server (on next page).

If you click the button and it launches another browser close it, open Internet Explorer and type 10.10.10.254 into the address bar and hit enter.

7. After you have logged in and the GoAhead Web Server page is displayed, click next on the Installation Guide to reveal this setup screen.

8. Once you have logged in you will also see this screen in Internet Explorer.

On the left hand side of this window, click Wireless Settings and then click Site Survey.

A list of Wireless connections in your vicinity will be displayed. Click the bullet point next to the name of your wireless router and click Add Profile.

10. If your wireless router has a WEP key, you will need to enter it now. If you have a 26 character WEP key, you will need to alter the WEP Key Length option to 128 bit. If your wireless connection does not have any WEP security, leave it as it is. After you have finished entering your WEP key or nothing at all, click the “Apply” button at the bottom of the screen.

11. Now click onto Wireless Settings > Profile. Click the bullet point next to the profile for your wireless router and click activate. You should get a green tick like this image.

12. Before you close Internet Explorer, go back to Wireless Settings > Site Survey and check that the entry for your wireless router has a green hand icon next to it. If it does not click the bullet point next to the router name and click Connect. Once you have the green tick and the green hands icon, close Internet Explorer.

13. Your WGA is now configured and linked to your wireless router. You can now click finish on your Mad Catz Installation Guide window. The WGA is now ready to connect to your games console. A good test to check that your WGA is working correctly is to try to access the internet with it. You should notice that your active network icon (in the bottom right hand corner of the screen) has appeared.

If the WGA does not allow your PC access to the internet and the network icon has an exclamation mark next to it, go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Centre. Here you will see a simple three point connection route consisting of your PC – Network – Internet. If the internet is not working then there will be a red cross at the network point of this route. Click the red cross and Windows will diagnose and resolve the problem. Windows will enable DHCP settings for the Local Area Network.

14. Once the WGA is unplugged from your PC, go back to the IP Address configuration screen and set your options back to ‘Obtain IP address automatically’ or re-enter your static IP information.

Troubleshooting Router Settings

If you have followed these instructions and the adapter does not connect, you might need to try altering your 802.11 mode on your router. If your router is set to 802.11 b/g/n mixed, try changing it to 802.11 G or N only to see if that resolved the matter.

It really depends what kind of router you have. Each manufacturer puts it somewhere else, but usually the selection of the standard you want to use is under Wireless Settings. Your router should have Mode selection there.
As a manufacturer default, your router will be set to Mix mode of B, G and N, so any wireless card which uses one of the following standards will work without any setting changes. Without knowing what router you have, we can only offer an example by providing you with info how to change router mode on Dlink DIR-655 router
Open Dlink Emulator

Click Log In
Click on Setup (top row)
Click Wireless Settings
Click Manual Wireless Network Setup (button)
and now you will see "802.11 Mode" setting on the screen, where you can select mode B, G, N or mixed
