INTERNATIONAL SEMINARS ON PLANETARY EMERGENCIES

Background and Data

History -

Started in 1981 with the famous series of Seminars on Nuclear War, the Erice International Seminars on Planetary Emergencies have been held annually at the Ettore Majorana Centre in Erice, Sicily. They are interdisciplinary and attended, upon invitation only, by top-level scientists and decision-makers from the world over. Scope of the Meetings -

Four kinds of meetings are held during the period from 18 to 26 August every year: The World Federation of Scientists' Permanent Monitoring Panels meetings, the International Seminar on Nuclear War and Planetary Emergencies, the World Federation of Scientists' General Meeting and the associated workshops.

Purpose of the Invitation to Erice -

The main event is the International (multidisciplinary) Seminar on Planetary Emergencies. The workshops are only associated events. All invitations made for the Agust Erice Meetings imply theactive participation to the Erice August Meetings, either as a speaker or a participant. Acessorily, the invitation is extended to participate to the Permanent Monitoring Panel Meetings and/or theassociated paralell workshops.

Duration of Stay in Erice -

The International Seminars are always held 20-23 August. It implies arriving latest on 19 August and departing earliest on 24 August. Those participating in an associated workshop will delay their departure accordingly. Last departures on 26 August.on 26 August.

In addition, the Permanent Monitoring Panel (PMP) members always meet on 19 August. It means that scientists expressly invited by the PMP Chairman to participate will have to anticipate their arrival date by one day, for the 18th of August.

Scope of the Invitation -

All scientists invited to the Erice International Seminars are our guests while in Erice.

Transfers - Erice is a one-hour drive from Palermo airport. Transfers are provided by the Ettore Majorana Centre. At Arrivals, look for the meeting-point poster “Ettore Majorana Centre”. Go to the tourist office in the Arrivals area if you have any problems or phone 0923 869 133.

Board and lodging - Full board and lodging is provided in Erice, free of charge for the duration, to participants involved in World Federation of Scientists activities. Accompanying spouses are welcome depending on the availability of double rooms. Participants should be aware that accommodation and facilities made available in Erice are modest, without being Spartan. Casual attire (but no shorts during sessions) and, as the streets are cobbled, thick-soled crepe or rubber-soled shoes are recommended.

Spouses activities - Participants are earnestly requested to give early confirmation, together with the names, that spouses will accompany them to Erice. A 3-day cultural programme of visits to the neighbouring archaeological sites and beaches is offered to the accompanying spouses.

Travel - The Ettore Majorana Centre provides travel tickets to speakers and participants residing in developing countries, based on the lowest available fare or most economical travel arrangements on the market, for the most direct routing. Within the limits of budgetary constraints, the same arrangements will be considered for speakers and participants from industrialised countries who specifically request it.

Speakers and participants may, if they wish, make their own arrangements on other flight classes and according to itineraries of their choice, and claim reimbursement on the basis of the lowest available fare on arrival in Erice. Organisation of Associated Workshops -

Date and duration - one or two days duration, starting 24 August.

Lecture halls - are equipped with overhead projectors and slide projectors. The sessions can be taped. Lecture halls are available from 09.00 until 19.00. Normal schedules are from 09.30 until 13.00, and from 16.00 to 19.00.

Services - On specific request, a technician will be made available during the sessions to help with slides and/or taping. Coffe breaks will be served mornings and afternoons. Photocopying can be done at the headquarters building.

Agendas and Proceedings - The Chair and the convenors are responsible for drafting the agenda, collecting the material and preparing the draft of the proceedings, which will be published as part of the International Seminars' publications.
