Mr Richard Baker
Department of Hand, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Consultant Plastic Surgeon
Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust
Approved: Katharine Horsfall
“The plastic surgery department would like to promote our new Plastic Surgery Urgent Care (PUC) clinic which runs every morning Monday to Friday at Wexham Park Hospital. It’s for patients with acute injuries such as lacerations, fingertip and hand wounds that can be seen and treated a ‘one stop shop’ fashion with the aim of improving convenience for patients and reducing the pressure on the ED. Patients can be booked into this clinic by calling the on-call team on 07787 276398. We would also like to highlight the introduction of modern treatment methods such as ‘wide awake local anaesthesia no tourniquet’ which reduces the need for general anaesthetics in hand surgery and using denervation techniques to treat arthritis in the hand. In addition our new paediatric MDT provides a forum for discussion of our paediatric patients particularly with respect to children with hypospadias and congenital hand differences.”

Medical Device Alert
The Trust has acted upon a Medical Device Alert received in January from the MHRA which identified a specific brand of Pacemakers and CRT-P that were found to be oversensing minute ventilation signals leading to risk of syncope and pre-syncope. We can confirm that all affected patients have duly been identified and contacted for the necessary appointments or actions.

Treatment of Kidney Stones and Prostate
Our Urology Department has a state of the art Holmium laser available at our Heatherwood & Wexham Park Hospital sites which can be used to treat kidney stones and prostates. Also known as holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP), the procedure uses a laser to remove tissue that is blocking urine flow through the prostate. Our Heatherwood site will also shortly be able to offer ExtracorporealShock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) providing treatment of kidney stones in a non-invasive manner. It involves using ultrasound to pinpoint and break up kidney stones into smaller pieces so it can be passed in the urine.
Prostate Cancer – Wexham
Marc Laniado, Consultant Urologist, Urology MDT Lead, Deputy Cancer Lead
Needs final approval from Liz once slimmed down prior to distribution
The urology department at Wexham Park have made a major impact on helping men at risk of prostate cancer be diagnosed both more accurately and safely. The department has reduced the number of men needing prostate biopsies to diagnose significant prostate cancer by 20% without missing out on important cancer by getting prebiopsy multiparametric MRI scans on all men at risk. This enhanced MRI scan helps identify those men who do not need biopsies but also where the cancer is located, as without scanning the location of cancer within the prostate was often unknown. Furthermore, as transrectal prostate biopsies can be painful and sometimes cause serious infections, Marc Laniado and his team have been performing MRI-targeted transperineal prostate which are both more accurate and much less likely to give rise to serious infections. Consequently, they have been able to advise men more safely and reliably on who needs interventional treatment and who may be monitored alone.
The urology department at Wexham Park Hospital, which is part of theThames Valley Cancer Alliance (TVCA), is the only urology department in this region to have met the 62-daySuspected Cancer Referral target every month for the last 6 month - outperformingall the other hospitals for the quick diagnosis and the delivery of treatment for patients with urological problems.

Mammography Machine in Breast Unit - Frimley
Getting ready for opening of Frimley Park Breast Unit in 2020;
we have laid the foundation of state of the art equipment and evidence based practices.
In radiology we have installed two brand new mammography kits.
The Tomo mamgraphy is very useful for dense breasts in the younger patients,
it increases sensitivity of cancer detection yet the specificity is also high, reducing recall and benign biopsy rates.
25% increase in cancer detection, and 20% reduction in recall rates and 50% increase in positive predictive value.
We have also introduced contrast mammography, to asses response after neoadjuvant chemotherapy.
On the front of minimally invasive therapy, we now use Vacuum Assisted Excision of indeterminate lesions,
hence avoiding open biopsies under a general anaesthetic.
On the surgical front we have lead in new minimally invasive implant breast reconstruction since 2009, usingAcellular Dermal Matrix. Since 2016 we have modified this technique, by avoiding muscle cover for the implanttherefore minimising postoperative pain; most of our breast reconstructions go home the next day.We attract fellows from afar as Scotland for training; most leave us for consultant posts.
In the research field we have taken part in many international and national studies. We currently have six national clinical studies.
The topics evolve around avoiding chemotherapy in oestrogen receptor positive cancer with positive nodes; OPTIMA Trial.
PRIMETIME is looking at avoiding radiotherapy in women over 60 with favourable early oestrogen positive breast cancer.
AGE GAP, looking at patient options and tools supporting patients over seventy make right choice of treatment.
Add ASPIRIN, for high risk breast cancer patients.
Mammo 50; trying to determine best regime of mammographic surveillance after breast cancer treatment.
Heralding the dawn of cancer genetics is the 100,000 Genome Study looking at the genetics that determine the individual behaviour of each cancer
To enable prediction of mutations and drug resistance and development of new treatment.
The Moving On Programme lead by our Breast Specialist nurses supports our patients after treatment in a programme focused on their concerns
and needs in a relaxed open and interactive approach with members of the multidisciplinary breast team.
Committed to excellence, working together and facing the future the breast unit at FPH is a true reflection of Frimley Park values.
New specialist unit at Frimley Park is good news for dialysis patients
A specialist renal unit has opened at Frimley Park Hospital, making state-of-the-art inpatient kidney care available locally for the first time. The eight-bed unit enables patients to receive dialysis treatment on site rather than face a transfer to another centre. The unit primarily provides inpatient haemodialysis, further renal services are expected to be developed over time, including renal biopsies. The inpatient renal unit is part of a wider regional renal strategy to provide a better experience for Frimley Park patients and their families by limiting their need to travel.

Leadership Development Manager
Mary Seacole Programme
The Mary Seacole Leadership Programme is well underway within the Trust which was one of the early adopters of the new refreshed national programme.
The programme is for first time leaders in healthcare, or those aspiring to their first formal leadership role. The programme had been running nationally for over two years with over 3,500 participants and the feedback received had been hugely positive demonstrating a real impact when participants return to their organisations.
We would like to explore rolling out the programme across the ACS footprint for places and training facilitators to run the cohorts with us. If you would like to find out more about the programme please contact Dawn Estabrook, Leadership Development Manager on 07771 977 392 or
