COURSE DESCRIPTION: Aerospace Science I – A Journey Into Aviation History is an aviation history course focusing on the development of flight throughout the centuries. It starts with ancient civilizations, then progresses through time to modern day. The emphasis is on civilian and military contributions to aviation; the development, modernization, and transformation of the Air Force; and a brief astronomical and space exploration history. It is interspersed with concise overviews of the principles of flight to include basic aeronautics, aircraft motion and control, flight power, and rockets. Leadership Education ITraditions, Wellness, and Foundations of Citizenship introduces cadets to the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) program providing a basis for progression through the rest of the AFJROTC program while instilling elements of good citizenship. Cadets will study Air Force organizational structure; uniform wear; customs and courtesies; and other military traditions health and wellness; individual self-control; and citizenship. This portion of the course concentrates on the elements of military drill. Most of the work is to be hands-on for drill. Cadets will wear the uniform once a week on Tuesdays and be inspected on that day.

Course Objectives:

A. Aerospace Science I

A Journey into Aviation History – Units 1-4 (Chapters 1-8)

1. Know the historical facts and impacts of the early attempts to fly.

2. Know the major historical contributors to the development of flight.

3. Know the contributions of the U.S. Air Force to modern aviation history.

4. Know the key events of space exploration history.

B. Leadership Education I

Traditions, Wellness, and Foundations of Citizenship – Chapters 1-5

1. Know the importance of AFJROTC history, mission, purpose, goals, and objectives.

2. Know military traditions and the importance of maintaining a high standard of dress and personal appearance.

3. Know the importance of attitude, discipline, and respect, and why values and ethics are so important.

4. Know the importance of individual self-control, common courtesies and etiquette.

5. Know the effective stress management program improves the quality of life.

C. Wellness/Physical Fitness: (Physical training, every Friday)

- Motivate JROTC cadets to lead active, healthy lifestyles beyond program requirements and into their adult lives.

Uniform Day: Every Tuesday, unless otherwise posted.

Grading Procedures:

a. A Journey into Aviation History (AS I) 40%

b. Traditions, Wellness, and Foundations of Citizenship and Drill (LE-I) 30%

c. Uniform Wear 10%

d. Wellness (Physical Fitness) 20%

Grading Scale:

A = 90% or above

B = 80-89%

C = 70-79%

D = 60-69%

F = 59% or below

Expectations: As an absolute minimum to remain in the JROTC program, cadets must:

a.  Conform to all Air Force JROTC customs, courtesies, and training requirements; also, obey all school rules.

b.  Properly wear the Air Force JROTC uniform on all assigned uniform wear days from the start of the school day until released. Failing to wear the uniform all day will result in a “0”(zero) grade for that uniform day. Multiple failures to wear your uniform can lead to disenrollment from the course.

c.  Each cadet is issued a complete set of Physical Training gear which is theirs to keep and they are expected to wear the PT gear on Fridays as part of their grade.

d.  Each cadet is issued a complete Air Force blue uniform (approximately valued at $220-$330) that they are expected to maintain in serviceable condition by laundering the shirt and dry-cleaning the pants, jacket, service coat. DO NOT WASH THE SERVICE COAT, this will ruin the service coat and you will be required to pay for damages/replacement.

Additional Requirements: Cadets are required to participate in the Veteran’s Day Parade and the unit’s Annual Awards Night (Graded events).
