Westward Expansion Mini-Project: “Immigrants Guide to the Territory”
By the time the project has been introduced, students will have completed the following:
Phase 1: Laying the Foundation:
- The Introductory Activities 1 and 2 {definitions of expansion and Facts on Territories}
- Map activities 3 and 4 – map drawing/coloring of territories and labeling/coding of states
- Taken quiz # 1 Introductory Quiz
Phase 2: Incorporating Technology in making an “Immigrants Guide to a Territory”
* In this phase students will use computers to make a travel brochure on their assigned regions
and carry-out research into the following areas:
Students will use computers to carry-out research on assigned territories for 4 days on the bulleted items listed below:
- Cover of Brochure… “Immigrants travel guide to… , include name of territory, attractive
pictures, nature, flowers, etc. etc., your name and period at the bottom
- Name/Location/Size… both general and more specific and approx. size of the territory in miles
- History … More detail than what has been covered in class so far - type in paragraph form
- Facts About… climate/weather, land forms, natural resources, physical beauty/attractions,
places of unusual interest – do this in bulleted format
- Famous People/Neat Facts… insert a few pictures/mention famous people who are from your
territory, or region, list other neat things people would want to see
- Travel Co. - Create the name of a fictional travel company with various travel packages
- Include: Contact Us…

After class time has been given and only after research has been finished… students will then be given approval to begin:
Phase 3: Making your Travel Brochure ex. “Immigrants Guide To Yukon Territory”
Set up your 3 Column Travel Brochure by doing 1 of the following:
Using “Microsoft Publisher”
Go to: Brochures and then click on “Informational’ for numerous 3 Col. Templates to consider
Or
Using “Word” open up and label your document
Go to: Page set up:Change margins to .7 all around the document, then click on landscape
Next: Click on Format at the top, click on Columns, in number of columns-go up to 3,
Phase 4: Students complete 3 Col. Immigrants Guide Travel Brochure at Home {4 days to complete}
by inserting information in appropriate panels-include pictures, graphics etc. as designer sees fit
Phase 5: In Groups, students will finish research on their assigned territories
- Complete outline provided for them in class
- Make a simple PowerPoint Presentation on the information they researched
Phase 6: in Groups, students will do the following:
- Present information to class via PowerPoint Pres. {need only cover outlines provided-basic maps}
- Class peers will complete their own empty outlines on each territory as it is presented
- Group Individuals will give a verbal presentation “promoting travel” and explaining their brochure
{explain with enthusiasm, the content in your “Immigrants Guide Travel Brochures”}
* Members must alert /advise the teacher of who prepared notes/PPt for peers for grading considerations!
