These requirements are intended to allow the scout to demonstrate that he has the skills necessary to be safe on some of the troop’s more challenging outings.
Exceptions to these may be made by the tour leader and scout master.
Cycling /
- Must attend the Troop Meeting presentations on cycling
- Complete a Bike Safety check
- Participate in a Troop scheduled bicycle “shakedown”
Backpacking /
- Complete one “car-camping” outing fully equipped for backpacking:
- Complete a Troop Meeting pack check
- Pack all personal gear for the outing in a backpack
- Attend outing with fully packed backpack
- Hike in to the actual “car-camping” site under supervision as designated by the tour leader (about 1 mile away)
- Must attend troop backpacking presentations
Ski Trips /
- The scout must be at least 2nd class
- The scout must already know how to ski or snowboard. (If the scout has not been on a ski trip previously with the troop, he should discuss his ability with the tour leader prior to sign up)
Winter Trek /
- Must be at least 2nd class
- Must have participated on at least one prior T159 backpacking trip
- Must participate in a “cool-weather” camping trip (can be the same as the backpacking trip). Cool weather is defined as November-> March tent camping.
- Must attend troop winter camping presentations
- Complete a Troop Meeting pack check
Water Paddling Outings /
- Complete First Class Swim Test
- Participate in the designated shakedown
- For “Fast Water” canoeing the tour leader may designate stronger paddlers as “stern qualified”. In the event that the trip does not have enough qualified stern paddlers, attendance will be restricted based on the following:
b)Scout has achieved 2nd class
c)Scout’s age (whatever age cutoff for bow paddlers is needed to have a stern paddler for each canoe)
- a has precedence over b, and b has precedence over c.
