St. Rosalie Parish Religious Education Program

~ P.R.E.P ~ Student Policy ~2009 – 2010

1.  Classes will be held each Wednesday evening from 6:30-7:30 P.M. or as noted otherwise on the calendar.

2.  Teachers are setting up their classrooms for Wednesday night’s lessons prior to class, so you should bring your child no earlier than 6:20 P.M. Once at the school, please be sure that he or she comes directly into the school’s lobby and is greeted by a teacher, assistant or the CRE before you leave. As soon as teachers meet their students in the lobby, the children will go to their assigned classrooms. Since classes begin at 6:30 P.M., students arriving after this time will be considered tardy. Tardiness is very distracting to the teacher and to other students. Please make every effort to see that your son or daughter arrives on time for class. Three tardies will be counted as one unexcused absence.

3.  Dismissal will be at 7:30 P.M. Please be on time to pick up your child. You can do one of two things: park your car and wait for your child outside the lobby and walk him or her to your car, or, if you prefer, cars will line up on one side of 2nd Avenue proceeding toward Fourth Street.

4.  Students who leave early must come in person, call or bring a signed note from their parent/guardian stating the time and reason for early dismissal. Leaving without permission may lead to suspension or expulsion. If your son or daughter will be walking to and from class, permission from parents is required.

5.  Students are required by the Archdiocese of New Orleans to attend a minimum of 30 clock hours of instruction per year. A student should not be absent unless he or she is sick or there is a family emergency. Please be sure to not schedule any sports, dance classes, etc., on religious education nights. There will be a limit of three unexcused absences during each school year. Continued absences will result in your son or daughter having to repeat the grade level. Students with contagious diseases will be asked to present a note from a doctor upon returning to class.

6.  Students should dress modestly. Jeans are permitted. Inappropriate language/designs on any piece of clothing are unacceptable. Knee length shorts may be worn. Midriff shirts or low slung pants are not permitted. Students dressing inappropriately will be sent to the office to call home.

7.  Students are responsible for their textbooks and folders. Should the student misplace or lose the textbook, a replacement fee of $15.00 will be charged.

8.  Each year the Archdiocese mandates a lesson in child protection for all students in religious education. During this year we will again, with great

care and concern for the safety of your son or daughter, present this lesson

to all of our students on October 7, 2009. Catechists who have been trained to teach the lesson as required will teach this lesson during regular class time.

9.  Candidates will normally prepare for Confirmation in the 11th grade. Candidates must be enrolled in and have attended religious education programs for at least two consecutive years prior to the reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation. Public school students from our parish attend the West Bank High School of Religion at Academy of Our Lady. These classes are held the first Saturday of each month from 9:00 – Noon. This year, classes will be offered in 9th – 12th grade. In the case of Catholic high school students, students must maintain a C or above average in religious instruction in their school and are required to attend parish Confirmation preparation in the 11th grade in order to be confirmed.

10. The instruction of Christian values should begin with the family in the home. Charity, virtue, good manners, civility and due respect are expected from your son or daughter. We as catechists encourage sharing with and caring for each other. You have entrusted your son or daughter to us. For their well being, the following actions which constitute disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.

·  FIGHTING

·  DISRESPECT TOWARD TEACHERS OR OTHER STUDENTS

·  SMOKING

·  DRUG / ALCOHOL / WEAPONS USE

·  WEAPONS

·  UNCHRISTIAN LANGUAGE

·  STEALING

·  CHEATING

·  CELL PHONE USE IS PROHIBITED DURING CLASS

·  DAMAGING OR MARRING CHURCH PROPERTY

·  DELIBERATE DISOBEDIENCE

·  REPEATED VISITS TO THE OFFICE FOR

DISCIPLINARY REASONS

Any disruptive behavior, such as those listed above, may result in suspension or, in extreme cases, expulsion. Drug/alcohol/weapon violations will be reported to civil authorities as required by the Archdiocese of New Orleans and Jefferson Parish.

11. If disruptive behavior occurs, students will be sent to the CRE to call his parent who will be required to pick up her child immediately. The student’s parent will then be required to come to class with his or her child on subsequent classes until all disruptive behavior ceases. If the student continues to display disruptive behavior, a conference will be scheduled to discuss suspension or expulsion from the program.

12. Please write a note to the teacher or CRE if there are any problems. In the spirit of cooperation, we encourage parents to try to work out any problems with the teacher by scheduling a planned Parent-Teacher Conference before class. The Coordinator will facilitate this meeting if requested.

13. If your son or daughter has an allergy, (such as peanut butter) please write the teacher a note at the beginning of the school year describing the allergy in detail. We are not allowed to administer medicine to your child.
