UNC Charlotte’s Explore | Open House!
Students and their families will discover all we have to offer as they take a campus tour, tour residence halls, meet faculty from the academic departments, talk with current students, and attend a variety of information sessions about academic programs, support services and student life.
This program is held four Saturdays a year, from 9:00am-2:00pm. Upcoming Explore UNC Charlotte dates for the 2012-2013 academic year are:

Students can make a reservation for Explore | Open House online by creating a Future 49er Web account.
In addition to presentations by several colleges, information sessions offered at Explore | Open House include:

If students are unable to attend UNC Charlotte’s Explore | Open House, you may remind them that they can still visit our campus for campus tours and information sessions, offered Monday through Friday at 1:30pm and Saturdays at 9:30am or 10:15am. Registration is required for campus tours and space is limited. Students can register online via their Future 49er Web portal.

FAFSA Day is a free service provided by College Foundation of North Carolina, the North Carolina Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, and the State Employees’ Credit Union. Get FREE help from financial specialists and college aid professionals to complete and submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) electronically.
9 a.m. to 12 noon (Times may vary, so check the CFNC website.)

COLLEGE APPLICATIONS AND TRANSCRIPT RELEASE FORMS
· Please give Mrs. Pulyer ten (10) working days to process the guidance counselor portion of your college applications. Any application with a specific deadline must be turned in ten (10) working days prior to the deadline. Guidance cannot accept responsibility for late applications.
· If your application contains a post card to be returned to you, you are responsible for the postage.
· DO NOT leave applications or any part of an application on Mrs. Pulyer’s desk. You can leave it in the box on her door.
· No fee will be charged for transcripts sent to colleges and/or prospective employers.
· To have transcripts sent, all seniors must complete a transcript request form (white sheet). This form is on the school website or you can come in and see Mrs. Farley (Guidance Secretary) for one.
· If the college application asks for your counselor’s email address, please list Mrs. Pulyer’s - - to ensure that any college requests are sent to the right place. Guidance cannot accept responsibility for any requests that are not sent directly to Mrs. Pulyer.
Are you an athlete hoping to receive an athletic scholarship to college????
Remember, you must register with the NCAA Clearinghouse @ www.ncaaclearinghouse.net. The Clearinghouse evaluates your academic record to determine if you are eligible to participate at a Division I or II college as a freshmen student-athlete. Now is the time to register. Cost to register: $75. If you were eligible to use an SAT or ACT waiver, you are also eligible for a Clearinghouse waiver. See Coach Weycker for more information.

The GAR College Scholarships
Six high school seniors will receive college scholarships up to $12,500 per year to attend any nationally accredited four-year college for full time study.
The scholarship is open to all high school seniors who:
· have shown high academic achievement (3.5 + GPA)
· have financial need
· are dependent children of employees who have, or had a career in the financial services industry

Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship
Through its Education and Leadership Development Program, the Jackie Robinson Foundation provides scholarships of up to $24,000/four years to minority high school students showing leadership potential and demonstrating financial need to attend an accredited 4-year college or university of their choice.
Eligibility
To be eligible for a Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship, an applicant must:
● Be a graduating, minority high school senior;
● Plan to attend an accredited and approved four–year institution within the United States;
● Show leadership potential;
● Demonstrate a dedication to community service;
● Present evidence of financial need;
● Be a United States citizen;
● A minimum SAT score of 1,000 combined on the math and critical reading sections or a composite ACT score of 22; and
● Does not possess a degree from a 2 or 4–year College when applying for the scholarship.
Application Components
The required components of the Jackie Robinson Foundation application are:
● A completed and submitted online application;
● One (1) letter of recommendation submitted online only
● SAT or ACT scores sent to the Foundation directly from the testing agencies. The Foundation’s college codes are: SAT 4248/ACT: 6570.
You will need to have a copy of your SAT or ACT scores and your latest high school transcript in order to complete the questions on the online application.
Mailing Materials
We will not accept the Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship application or supporting documents via mail, email or fax. Applications and letters of recommendation will only be accepted via our online application program.

The Florence Kidder Memorial Scholarship
The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the state of North Carolina will award a scholarship of $3,000, and a runner-up scholarship of $1,000 to 2 NC high school seniors, to be used at a NC college or university. The recipients will be selected on the basis of character, need, and scholastic record, as well as on the merit of their essay on the assigned topic. Please see Mrs. Pulyer in Guidance for a copy of the application.

MICHAEL A. DeMAYO SCHOLARSHIP:
For the ninth consecutive year, the Law Office of Michael A DeMayo is pleased to offer local seniors an opportunity to win scholarships to help further their education. They will be awarding ten (15) $2,500 scholarships to seniors who are chosen by the committee as having submitted the best presentation on a pre-selected topic and who will attend a four-year institution of higher learning.
Qualifications:
Must have applied for acceptance for a full-time enrollment at a four-year school
-A type written application
-A presentation (video/power point/brochure/website/speech) that encourages fellow teens to abstain from underage drinking and/or highlights the dangers of drinking and driving
-High school transcript
-SAT scores (print off and send with application)
-Two letters of recommendation

The Buick Achievers Scholarship Program
$25,000 and $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors who put forth an effort and find success both in and out of the classroom, yet are unable to attend college without financial assistance. The NCHSAA offers student athletes several scholarship opportunities that range from $1,000 to $2,000. Please go to www.nchsaa.org and click on “Student-Athlete Scholarship Awards” to access the online application and information on the various scholarships they sponsor.

The Matthew C. Graziadei Achievement Award
The Exceptional Children’s Assistance Center will be awarding a $1,000 award to an Outstanding NC High School Senior with a Disability. This award can be used for any post-high school learning or for equipment/technology needed for employment. Any WIHS staff member may nominate a senior with a disability who exemplifies the following attributes: determination, perseverance, persistence, dedication, confidence, motivation, fortitude, accomplishment, excellence, and quality. Please see Mrs. Pulyer in Guidance for a copy of the nomination form (MUST be a staff member who completes this form).

The AMVETS Americanism Contest
AMVETS is sponsoring an essay contest for all high school students with awards ranging from $100 - $1,000. To enter, you must write an essay that is 500 words or less (11th & 12th graders) or 400 words or less (9th & 10th graders) on “Why is it Important to Vote?” Please see Mrs. Pulyer in Guidance for a copy of the entry form and for more information.

SECU People Helping People Scholarship
If you have a gpa of over 2.5 and plan to attend a 4-year public NC college (one of the 16 campuses of the UNC system), please see Mrs. Pulyer in Guidance to get your nomination application for this $10,000 scholarship ($1,250/semester). There will be a winner from each NC traditional public high school, so we expect all of you that qualify to apply!!!!

Iredell County Farm Bureau Scholarship
The ICFB is offering a $1,000 scholarship for any senior high school student who is attending a 4-year, community, or technical college. The criteria are: (1) financial need, (2) satisfactory scholastic record, (3) leadership potential, and (4) good character. Preference is given to Farm Bureau family members. Please see Mrs. Pulyer in Guidance for a copy of the application and for more information.

North Carolina Bar Association Scholarship Program
This scholarship is for children of NC law enforcement officers killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty. Last year, 8 students were awarded this scholarship and received funds between $250 - $4,000. State Employees Association of NC (SEANC) Scholarship
This scholarship is for students whose parents or guardians are members of SEANC. They offer 13 merit and 13 need-based scholarships for students going to a 4-year college and 3 merit/3 need-based for students planning to attend community or technical college. Lillie Norket Scholarship
This scholarship is for Iredell County students pursuing healthcare-related careers and is a need-based scholarship. Students must be attending an accredited nursing program or a 4-year, community, or technical college. Please see Mrs. Pulyer in Guidance for an application.
