WEST HILL PRIMARY SCHOOL

INFORMATION ABOUT THE SCHOOL

West Hill Primary School is situated in West Dartford along the Dartford to Crayford Road. The school is ideally situated close to the Dartford River Crossing and is close to a comprehensive network of major roads and motorways. The Dartford and Crayford Railway stations are close by.

There has been a school on the site of West Hill Primary School since 1889 when the primary school was organised as separate schools. The amalgamation of the West Hill Infant and Junior Departments led to the formation of West Hill Primary School. The school celebrated a decade as a primary school in 2005.

Throughout the school’s history the school has been recognised by the community of West Hill to be a highly popular and oversubscribed school. For the academic year 2012-2013 the school was recorded on 243 common application forms. The school’s standard number is 70. The organisation of the teaching groups is documented in the school’s prospectus.

Many of our children are the second or even third generation of their families to attend the school. The school therefore lies at the heart of the community.

Curriculum Initiatives

The school’s curriculum statement is incorporated into the school prospectus, as is a profile of each subject. However, in addition to the school’s curriculum the school was awarded an International Award from the British Council and the school has gained the Healthy Schools Award, Active Mark, Platinum Travel Plan, Eco Schools Award Bronze and the Safe Schools Accreditation.

The School Site and Buildings

The main teaching block was built in 1889; there are two timbered classrooms that have been extensively modernised and a separate school canteen with an additional room that is used as a music room.

In 1995 extensive improvements were made to the school’s accommodation including the development of a second school hall, a two classroom block that is currently used as the Foundation Stage unit, improvements to the infant classrooms and improvements to staff and office accommodation.

The school is currently undertaking a new build, comprising of a new IT Suite and administrative areas. The project is scheduled to be completed in August 2012.

The governors and staff have demonstrated tremendous determination and commitment to make further improvements to the school site. These improvements have included the replacement of windows on all elevations of the school, several re-roofing projects, a shared commitment to implementing the school’s Accessibility Plan and several painting projects.

The school has an attractive and well-resourced library that is organised by the Year 6 pupils.

All classrooms have networked computers and there are interactive white boards installed in all classrooms. All teaching staff have a laptop.

The school does not have a playing field, but has a large tarmac playground. The school uses two swimming pools to support its extensive swimming programme.

The school has developed a Professional Learning Centre for staff where collaborative planning can take place and resources for all subject areas are available.

Staff

Our personnel work hard to develop policies and schemes of work. The school has developed a programme for monitoring teaching and learning in which subject leaders and members of the senior management team play an active role. The governors have supported this initiative resourcing release time for curriculum leaders and members of the senior management team to support them in the development of their monitoring role.

The school believes that continued professional development as well as teaching and learning are at the heart of school improvement. The school has a proven record of supporting all staff in developing their own learning and enabling them to improve their classroom practice.

Governors

Governors are most supportive in trying to utilise the school’s budget to support the continued development of the school. Our Governing Body is interested in all areas of work. They bring their knowledge and considerable expertise to their roles.

Parents

Parents are generally supportive of the work that we do in school and there is a very active PTA who also appreciates the need to ensure that our pupils have well equipped classrooms. Fund raising events are held throughout the year and the staff contributes to these wherever possible.

Pupils

The School Council is proud of the contribution they have made, through the decision making process, to the development of the school. The School Council have raised money for school projects and for charity.

The children are encouraged to make decisions and to learn responsibility and accountability from an early age. Each child is accepted and respected for the individual contribution that he or she can make to the school community.

The children enjoy a range of enrichment and extra-curricular activities provided by staff. The children have experienced considerable success in competitive sport at district, county and regional levels.

Links with Community Partners

West Hill Primary School is a member of the Dartford West Cluster of schools, following a recent reorganisation undertaken by Kent County Council. The Cluster comprises of 20 schools spanning across primary, secondary and special schools.

The aim of the Cluster is to work co-operatively to enhance the learning of all pupils who attend schools within the Cluster. At the centre of the Cluster philosophy is a commitment to joint decision making and the sharing of expertise between the member schools within the Cluster.

For many years the school has developed strong partnerships with secondary schools to support our pupils’ learning. These partnerships focus upon design technology, science, maths, modern foreign languages, primary secondary transfer and gifted and talented pupils.
