Background Information

West Hampstead Community Centre

West Hampstead Community Centre is a relatively new organisation offering activities and services to the residents of West Hampstead. The Manager and Administrator started work in January 2010 with funding from Camden Council, and moved into its current premises in June of that year.

A wide range of activities is now on offer for children, young people and adults.

Profile of West Hampstead

West Hampstead encompasses the local government wards of Fortune Green and West Hampstead in the London Borough of Camden. It is a vibrant and active community and has a village feel. The area is mixed racially and culturally. There is a well-established population of families who have lived in West Hampstead for many generations; professionals who have moved into the area more recently; plus a large number of refugees and asylum seekers. The population was 20,518 at the 2001 census.

The ethnic make-up of the population is mixed. In 2001 the population comprised: White British (55%); Irish or White non-British (25%); Black British, Asian or Asian British, Chinese and mixed race (20%). There is a significant number of Somali refugees, Bangladeshi families, and Eastern Europeans.

Although West Hampstead is often perceived as being an affluent area, there is great disparity between the richest and poorest, with pockets of great need.

Post of Older People’s Worker

The provision of services for older people is an important part of WHCC’s business plan. Funding has therefore been set aside for outreach with older people and organisations working with older people to determine their needs and interests, and to develop services accordingly.

The Older People’s Worker will be key to developing this project. It will involve seeking out older people, discussing with them their views and ideas, and making recommendations to the Manager and trustees on how West Hampstead Community Centre can best respond. Research has shown an interest in a social group, which will be part of the development work.

Funding is for seven hours a week over one year. It is planned to fundraise for the project to enable it to continue the work.

December 2011

West Hampstead Community Centre is registered as the Community Association for West Hampstead, a company limited by guarantee, no.6956009, and a charity, no.1135778.
