Stand Up to Temptation

Surveys suggest Americans eat as many as five meals per week in restaurants, with average servings vastly exceeding the recommended daily calorie count for a typical adult. When you factor in the nearly constant availability of snacks and candy, it’s easy to give in to the constant temptation to eat, eat, eat.

That’s why our Resisting Temptation class is one of our most popular offerings. Participants start by studying the menus of popular chain restaurants, learning how to identify high-calorie items presented as healthy choices. For instance, did you know that a Caesar salad can come drizzled with as many as 600 calories of high fat dressing? In addition to learning how to navigate restaurant menus, you’ll learn how to choose relatively healthy treats to keep healthy eating from becoming a chore.

Chill Out with Proven Stress Reduction Strategies

In her highly regarded books, Dr. Sita Rahm, a longtime member of WHC’s Complementary Medicine Department, explores numerous methods for reducing, preventing and coping with stress. Dr. Rahm’s stress reduction class emphasizes the power you have to manage the stress in your life. You have more control than you think over your thoughts, your emotions, and the way you structure your time.

In the first class, participants focus on identifying the sources of stress in their lives, taking care not to overlook hidden causes of anxiety, such as stress-inducing sleep habits and procrastination. Subsequent classes delve into common causes of stress, ways to avoid stress, and techniques for managing the unavoidable stressors of daily life.

Manage Chronic Pain with Yoga

Searching for relief from chronic pain from arthritis, fibromyalgia, headaches or other conditions? In a surprising number of cases, the solution is relaxing, simple and enjoyable—yoga! Kevin Adelman’s class, Yoga for Managing Chronic Pain, explores the many pain relief benefits of daily yoga.

The first session focuses on general body awareness and balance. You’ll learn some simple poses that you can do at home to relieve tension. Subsequent classes zero in on pain centers, with special emphasis on back stretches and neck care. Breathing exercises are practicedin every class. Research has shown the effectiveness of these exercises in relieving pain from a variety of causes. By learning to engage muscles effectively, and learning to release muscles that are gripping unnecessarily, you can achieve amazing relief in a short amount of time.
