Job Title: Full Time Resident Tutor

Accountable to: Director of Boarding

Accountabilities

A Resident Tutor is attached to one of the School’s Boarding Houses. S/he is an important member of the House pastoral team, taking the lead from the Director of Boarding and Head of Girls / Boys Boarding.

A Resident Tutor’s timetable consists of supporting academic departments, assisting with extra-curricular activities and spending time in House. The Line Manager of the Resident Tutors, alongside the Head of Girls Boarding, co-ordinates the Resident Tutor’s timetable and additional activities.

House Duties:

  • Resident Tutors will be on duty every weekend during term time.
  • Resident Tutors will have 2 full days off during each week (less during the weekend Saturday and Sunday).
  • Resident Tutors are expected to help in their Boarding House three mid-week evenings, at House events and before and after short and long leaves.
  • The Director of Boarding will make clear the routines and expectations in House (inevitably each House has its own idiosyncrasies) and inducts the Resident Tutor in these.
  • The Director of Boarding will instruct the Resident Tutor each time s/he helps in the House on the specific duties for that evening.
  • The Resident Tutor will expect to be invited to join House parties, outings, photographs and is sometimes required to help plan these events.
  • The Resident Tutor will expect to be kept informed of any significant issues affecting the House in general, or particular individuals, whenever appropriate.
  • Collecting travel information and arranging transport at the end of each term.

Supporting Academic Staff:

  • A Resident Tutor will be attached to one or more academic departments according to his/her degree and A-Level Subjects.
  • Resident Tutors may be asked to help with university preparation lessons and give individual University advice to girls in the Sixth Form.

Extra-Curricular/Trips:

  • Resident Tutors will be asked to accompany school trips and will occasionally be asked to complete the relevant paperwork e.g. risk assessments.
  • If a Resident Tutor has a particular extra-curricular interest, such as Drama, Sport or Music, s/he will be asked to help with these activities. This may be part of a timetabled lesson or be in the evenings.
  • A major component of the Resident Tutor’s role is to help with activities at the weekend. This includes staffing trips, socials and sporting fixtures as well as giving support in House.

Weekends

  • Resident Tutors will be required to work all term time weekends.
  • Weekend duties include wake ups, bedtime routines, supporting the art, music and drama activities in House and staffing a variety of trips, both extra-curricular and sporting.

Other:

  • Resident Tutors will be expected to attend weekly meetings with their Line Manager.
  • Resident Tutors are expected to attend Inset Days.
  • Resident Tutors are expected to reside in the house during term time.
  • Resident Tutors will be expected to supervise the prep sessions.
  • Resident Tutors may be asked to assist with exam invigilation.
  • Resident Tutors will be expected to provide emergency medical cover in House when necessary.

If your post is graded above point 28 or equivalent you are required (subject to the provisions of the Working Time Regulations) to work the hours that are necessary to do the job, this may occasionally involve attendance at meetings out of school hours.
