Welcome to Wales

Croeso i Cymru

Wales is part of the United Kingdom, which is made up of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and WALES.

We have our own Welsh language, which is reflected in some of the place names on the map of Wales.

We are a nation famous for our choirs, singing, mountains, valleys, coalmines, castles and rugby.

Our school is 5 miles / 8 kilometres from the seaside town of Porthcawl.

Our town is called Bridgend and it used to be a market town. We are 25 miles / 40 kilometres from Cardiff which is the capital city of Wales.

On March 1st we celebrate St. David’s Day - the patron Saint of Wales.

We have an Eisteddfod which is a tradition of Wales.

The children are in three competing groups or houses and they compete against each other. The competitions are art, handwriting, re-telling a story – these competitions are judged before the day. On stage, in front of the parents, are solo singing, recitations, dialogue, disco dancing and choir - all through the Welsh language.

On March 1st the girls wear traditional Welsh costume, which consists of a red flannel skirt, shawl and tall black hat. Nowadays the older children and boys usually wear a red rugby shirt to show their loyalty to Wales.

We also wear a yellow daffodil, which is our national flower.

Below is a picture of some children in our school wearing their National costume with pride. This photo was taken March 1st 2004.

You can also see our locality behind them so that you can see the type of houses we live in.

Our school day starts at 9a.m. and ends at 3.30p.m. with an hour

for lunch. We have a number of after school clubs such as dance, computers, rugby and netball until 4.15 p.m.

We have English and Mathematics in the morning and science, history, geography, PE., Games, RE, art, Design technology and music in the afternoons. We have three playgrounds and a large grass area to play on.

Our school has 180 pupils with seven teachers and a headmaster.

The climate in Wales is somewhere in the middle – not too hot and not too cold (although we are known to have a lot of rain). We have fantastic scenery from our beaches to the mountains and valleys.

We hope that you have enjoyed your brief visit to our country as we have enjoyed our class discussions as we decided what to include to send around the world.

And finally ......

WE LOVE EPALS

and communicating around the world.
