Syllabus

Welcome to Theatre Arts 1! Whatever your reason for being in this class, your first acting job is to let me believe you want to be here. Although I do not expect perfection I do expect you to do your best.Do not settle for mediocrity and apathy. Strive to improve from one day to the next. If you have had drama in Junior High, some of what we will do may be familiar. That’s O.K. You can work on improving yourself and set an example for those who are completely new to all this.

Your Attitude is the most important thing to remember in Theatre Arts. Keep an Open Mind, do your Best, and Respect yourself and others at all times. We are all individuals. We each have our own strengths and weaknesses. We are not here to judge personalities, but to help each other to develop our theatrical abilities and grow as human beings.

Theatre is an art form that takes a great deal of Cooperation to create a good finished product. You must be able to Adapt to different situations and people to Excel in a Theatre class. Group work is an important part of Theatre class. You will need the ability to: work cooperatively with others, stay focused, stay on task, evaluate yourself and others in a constructive manner, use your time wisely, exhibit self responsibility, and self-initiative. These skills are necessary for success in this class and will greatly help you in other aspects of your life.

Course Objectives

  • Develop a respect of other’s opinions, ideas, feelings, and things.
  • Develop Self-assurance (in the classroom and in daily life).
  • Develop the ability to organize thoughts (in your head and on paper).
  • Encourage an appreciation of the theatre (as actor / audience member).
  • Encourage and develop responsibility (individual and group).
  • Encourage constructive giving and taking of critique.
  • Gain knowledge of theatre history and theatre terminology.
  • Improve expression ( vocally and bodily)
  • Stimulate creativity.

Grades:

Daily Work/ Preparation/Audience Etiquette and Critique 50%

Your participation in class, warm-up and audience will determine a large portion of your grade.

How you go about preparing for the performance is just as important as the actual performance. Having a positive attitude toward the assignments and fellow classmates work is the key to making a high grade.

Test /Performance /Projects = 40%

The performances are considered tests over the knowledge you have learned so far in the class and the focus of that particular assignment.

Writing Assignments/ Writingassignments, Notebook checks, Notes = 10%

They should be in on time, neat and well thought out.

Makeup Work

Makeup work is your responsibility. When you return from your absence come to me for the assignment.They will generally be a written assignment that you will be expected to do outside of class. Assignments are due 2 class periods after you return to school. Late assignments will be counted as 0’s.
