National Minimum Wage

16 – 17 year olds (aboveschool leaving age but under 18) £3.72 per hour

18 – 20 year olds £5.03 per hour

21 years and over £6.31 per hour

Apprentices under 19 or in the first year of an apprenticeship £2.68 per hour

Apprentices work alongsideexperienced staff to gain specific skills. Apprentices also attend a training provider such as a local college (usually on a day release basis) to receive additional training which leads to recognised qualifications. Apprenticeships usually last between one and three years depending on the training programme. Looking for an apprenticeship is like looking for a job. You will be interviewed and may need to take a test for theemployer or training provider to check an apprenticeship is right for you.

How much do you get paid:

The new National Minimum Wage (NMW) came into force on 1 October 2012 where all apprentices will be paid a minimum of £2.68 per hour*.

The new apprentice NMW applies to all 16 to 18 year olds and to those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship.

If you reach age 19 and have completed the first year of your Apprenticeship your employer must pay you at least the full NMW rate for those aged 18 to 20. If you are already 19 and have completed the first year of your Apprenticeship you must be paid at least the NMW rate for your age.

The Pathway Programme

The Pathway Programme is an employment and skills project in partnership with government work programme provider, Working Links. It offers eight weeks unpaid work experience with the potential to progress onto a six month paid placement.

Placements are available in a variety of locations across Dorset including Blandford, Christchurch and Fleetsbridge and for a range of office-based and trade positions.

Health and Social Care Apprenticeship Programme for 16-23 year olds

During this time students will complete:

BTEC Certificate in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care
Functional Skills Certificate
Level 1 Certificate in Health and Social Care.
Pre-employability training
Interview with placement employer
Employer Rights and Responsibilities

Following this, students will progress into a work placement (that Pursuit Training will help arrange) where they will work up to 30 hours a week for a period of 12 months. During this time they will complete the Level 2 Diploma.

Students will beemployed on a temporary contract and paid at the apprenticeship rate (currently £2.68 ph) during this time. Hopefully the work placement will then offer them permanent employment although there is no guarantee of this.
