Welcome to the Springfield Primary School Sports Newsletter!

This month has so far been quite eventful and we have seen a lot of activity over many sporting events.

NETBALL

The Netball team played at Derwent Primary School on Friday 3rd May. They won both of their games scoring 6-3 against Derwent Primary School and 6-1 against Borrow Wood Primary School. Fantastic teamwork went a long way in Springfield securing both of their wins. A huge well done to Praise Adedokum, Harry Wadelin, Casey Ablott, Lucy Walker (Year 6) Ellie Middleton (Year 5) and Liam Taylor (Year 4).

MINI TENNIS RED COMPETITION

Children from Years 3 and 4 played at Derbyshire Tennis Centre on Tuesday 7th May. Having played individual games against many competing schools, they came away with an overall win and received FREE tennis lessons and rackets! Springfield Primary School is now through to the Tennis County Finals that take place during the Schools Games event on 9th July. Well done to Jessica Birch, Shay Carroll, Isaac Mumtaz-Wong and Liam Taylor.

FOOTBALL

Springfield has been taking part in many football events over the past month.

We have won lost and drawn matches, but we are a young side and developing and improving for next season. A big thank you to all of those who have taken part, including Harry Wadelin and Louis Elms from Year 6, George Bailey, Zak Buttery, Joe Davies, Ryley Holloway, Kora Downing, Keiran Plimmer, Jack Mossman from Year 5 and Liam Taylor, Isaac Mumtaz-Wong, Tom Davies and Ryan Davies from Year 4.

KENYA CHARITY SHIELD

Children from Years 5 and 6 have recently taken part in a sporting tournament hosted this year at St Werburgh's School. This charity event helps to raise money for partner schools in Kenya. This is a yearly event and the children can take part in a variety of sports, being awarded points for goals scored and teamwork. It was a close tournament, with the final game being the decider. With only four points between the two schools, Springfield Primary School managed to hold on to the Charity Shield for another year! Well done to all those who took part and thanks goes to St Wergburgh's for a fun-packed afternoon.

KWIK CRICKET

A small selection of children were selected to play for a Kwik cricket tournament at Darley Park on Tuesday 21st May. Eight teams, from five different schools, took part in the competition. Each game consisted of two teams, having one innings with eight overs. The batting side started with two hundred runs, with runs gained being added or deducted if bowled or caught out. Springfield Primary School won their group and now progress to the City Final, which will be held at Darley Park on the afternoon of Monday 17th June. Congratulations go to Liam Taylor, Isaac Mumtaz-Wong, Tom Davies, Zak Buttery, Ryley Holloway, Joe Davies, Harrison Mander and Blaise Doughty.

PLAY ON THE PITCH

Children from Years 1 and 2 had an exciting day out when they visited Pride Park Stadium for the “Play on the Pitch” sessions. There was a carousel of activities including hoop and beanbag, racket and ball race, dribbling the ball and a dance-a-thon, to name a few. Even the adults had fun exercising to the music! A great day had by all (in between the rain showers!) and thanks goes to Derby City School Sport Partnership (SSP) for organising this event!
