Welcome to the November issue of the Volun-tees Newsletter.
Thank you to those who attended our recent Health and general Volunteering Fairs – we hope you found it useful to chat with local voluntary organisations. If you expressed an interest in any of their opportunities, please sign up, search and apply for them on the Volun-tees website www.voluntees.co.uk to have the chance of gaining extra recognition as a university volunteer. If you missed the fairs, don’t worry - the organisations who attended are registered with Volun-tees and you can apply for their opportunities directly online and have another chance to meet them at the University during Student Volunteering Week, 24-28 February.
Do you have a limited amount of time but would still like to volunteer? You can participate in one-off, student-led volunteering activities - search and apply for Teesside University VIP Board and Emma Forster, VIP Board Chair, will get in touch to explain what you can get involved in.
New Opportunities:
Various opportunities with Middlesbrough Council, including:
FAST Community Facilitator - Families and Schools Together (FAST) is a fun project aimed at 3-5 year olds and their families. Interested in working with children and their families in a school environment? Like playing games, group activities and sharing food? Then this is the opportunity for you!
Following 2 full days training you will commit to attending the 8 week programme on Wednesdays 3.15 - 6pm from 22.01.13 - 19.03.13 (excluding 19.02.14) and debrief mornings of 23.01.14; 06.02.14; 20.03.14.
Community Support Volunteer - This is a "hands on" volunteering role which will give you practical experience in the adult learning field. Assist the tutor in delivering ICT while helping the learner with the English language used in their ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) course.
Data and Admin Support - Update the EMS database with governor attendance at meetings and training; confirm attendance at meetings; circulate papers for meetings in line with statutory deadlines; general clerking duties.
Reindeer Parade – Take part in Middlesbrough Town Centre’s Christmas Parade on 1st December – carry giant firebird and ice dragon sculptures or help with face-painting of children from local schools taking part.
IT Support (writing an App) - Doorways Youth Project
Our team is in need of some practical support, looking at installation issues with our software when encountering some client’s network/ computer suite. We are also looking into the possibility of creating an “App” that will engage with young people and inform them of current services/ activities.
Fundraising Assistants – Victim Support
Morrisons Supermarket at Berwick Hills Middlesbrough has given Victim Support the opportunity to raise much needed funds for their charity. This will take the form of a bag pack where volunteers will help shoppers pack their bags – up to 5 hours on Sunday 24th November.
Website Volunteer - Friends of Redcar Cemetery
We are undertaking some research to mark the centenary of WW1 and would like help to put in QR codes in the cemetery, linking some of the headstones of the WW1 men and women who have died in this conflict to the website, and we also need help to update our existing website frocem.co.uk
Various opportunities with DigitalCity Community, including:
Middlesbrough Mela volunteers required to form the crew who shoot content to the large stage side screens. This involves camera crew and vision mixing.
Stockton Weekender volunteers for media crew required to film on stage action and send to huge stage side screens via vision mixer.
Film Making Facilitators - Whitecliffe Primary School. Volunteers required to facilitate the children to make a film. This would include storyboarding, planning and preparation, shooting and editing.
Helping South Tees NHS Trust connect with community - Helpdesk operators connecting health care professionals with the community
Independent Custody Visitor - Police and Crime Commissioner for Cleveland
Independent Custody Visitors are Independent Members of the Community who visit Police Stations unannounced to check on the welfare of individuals in Police Custody. Training is provided.
Mentor - Headland Future Ltd
Do you have the time, enthusiasm and willingness to fulfil the Volunteer Mentor role?
• Can you relate to children and young people?
• Can you show commitment to young people who may be facing various challenges?
• Do you have the ability to accept young people as they are?
Mentoring takes place in an identified safe environment at various locations in Hartlepool and the surrounding areas. Venues include primary schools, community venues and/or Wednesday or Thursday evening sessions at Headland Future.

ANNUAL SANTA RUN (approx 2 miles)
Hardwick Country Park, Sedgefield
Sunday 1st December 2013, commencing 10.30am
Adults: £10.50 (includes full Santa suit)
Children (15 & under): £5 (includes Santa hat, medal & certificate)
(Children under 8 MUST be accompanied by an adult throughout the event)
All proceeds will go to the Butterwick Hospice at Bishop Auckland
