No. 1, February 2016

Welcome to the New Year: In 2016 the Wagga Wagga City library will celebrating 70 years of service to community. Throughout the year they will be holding special events, activities and competitions, in fact we will be celebrating all year and we hope you will join us. The actual anniversary date is 24th May, and that will be a day of some formal celebrations and special events. More details later.

Until19th February, you could be in the running to win one of 10 double passes to the Forum 6 Cinema to see “Brooklyn”, the film adaption of Colm Toibin’s novel. All you have to do is borrow an item by an Irish author. To help you, the staff have put all the library’s “Irish flavoured” titles in one place. When you borrow one of these items, check it out for the lucky shamrock tucked inside.

Then just write your name and your membership number on the shamrock and place it in the Shamrock’s Box, and you will be in the draw. The draw will be on 19th February. And the best of Irish luck to you all, to be sure, to be sure.

Guest author, Robyn Collins, will launch her book “Return to soul” on Saturday, 13th February at 2pm, in the Community Learning Space. Dealing with the death of a newborn baby after all being well for the 9 months of expectation is a harrowing life experience. Robyn’s spiritual journey after her personal tragedy lead her to Eastern and Western philosophies for comfort and understanding. Her book and meditation CD will be available to purchase at $20 each after the launch. Both cash and card payment will be available. Bookings are necessary, but the session is free. Phone 69269700 for bookings, or online at .

Story time is back, started this week. On Wednesdays and Fridays during school terms, there aresessions at 10am and 11am. Bookings not required, just come down to the children’s area. If you have a pusher or pram, remember the door on the lagoon side of the building will be open, so the entrance is much easier to access.

Baby Bounce is on again in March, commencing on March 3rd until 24th, at 10.30am for each half hour session. Bookings not needed, but each participant needs a parent or carer, for one on one interaction. This will be in the children’s area as well.

For those members who are restricted in their mobility, remember that the lagoon side entrance is open each day for ease of access. This is a great help with the far more level and simple access for anyone finding getting around difficult.

Just announced, the “One Book, One Wagga” book this year is the 2015 Miles Franklin literary award winner, “The eye of the sheep” by Sofie Laguna. The library has purchased copies of the book, with some contribution from the Friends of the Library towards the cost. So the book is now available for loan from the library. There will be a number of events related to the book during the upcoming months.

Sofie will be the Guest of Honour at the Gala Dinner on Friday May 27th, at the Mirage Room, RSL Club. The dinner and interview with Sofie will cost $50. Bookings can be made and payment with card, from the link on the Library’s web page, under the Events link.

First meeting for the Friends for the year will be at 4.45pm, Tuesday 9th February, in the Community Learning Space.
