Welcome to the new Careers year and to all new and returning students!

Careers on “WOODLE“andthe CAREERS ROOM

Make sure you usethe Careers and UCAS“Woodle” pages!

Click on“Careers and UCAS” tab on Woodle toolbar, then find tabs like “choosing a career”and “Work Experience and Volunteering”all with lots of useful info and links.

The Careers Room is open 9.00am – 4.00pm Mon-Thurs and 9-2pm Friday for research and quiet work.

We have careers and university guides, prospectuses, leaflets, magazines, job information, course guides, employer information, and volunteering and Gap-year information.

(The Careers notice board is in the corridor outside- Current information is always here)

Drop in slots (no appointment necessary) are usually 10-11.00 Mon and 11-11.30-Tues-Friday- (see notices)

Are you interested in particular subjects or careers?

Get up to date information on events, opportunities and work experience via your Woodhouse Email. Lists include the Sciences, Health and Medicine, Engineering, Law, English, History, Psychology, Social Sciences, University abroad etc.

Go onto your Woodle page and click on link at the bottom to access the list and select interests

A specially created workshop and talk for all Woodhouse students-

Justin Faye – one of favourite guest speakers- will deliver 2 interactive sessions which will:

*Bringalive the key skills and qualities employers are looking for,

*Show you what your strengthsare,

and

*Help you see what you would really enjoy doing and succeed in at work!

Lower 6th students:

SOAS, University of London: SCHOLARS SCHEME

SOAS invites talented Year 12 students from less advantaged backgrounds to take part in a scheme to equip you for selective Higher Education. It is for those who want to develop their understanding of the world, widen their horizons and re-examine preconceptions of Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Commitment: 10 Saturday mornings between October and March, with small group work with current students, master classes, study support, plus a Summer School. You need to have an interest in one of these: Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (including Law)

Kings College London:Year 12 “KING’S +SCHEME”

King’s College has a special scheme for students to students to equip them with what they need to succeed into Higher Education

You need to:

*Have parents without Higher education

*Have achieved at least 8 grade C’s at GCSE level

You get:

Mentoring from King’s students, Workshops on university life, Master classes,

Support for degree application, an opportunity to complete an academic assignment with King’s research students, and more!

The Art Department will tell you the dates for Art Foundation Applications.

References are then added and your application is sent by us to UCAS after 4-5 weeks.

Help with Personal Statements

  • Your “Progression Booklet” has a section on essentials of statement writing- Careers has a range of other useful handouts.
  • Once you have written your statement you must go to your personal tutor or subject tutor first for feedback.
  • Workshops for 1-1 help : Wednesdays from 2-4pm in Careers (except on 23/9 in MLZ)

Not sure what you want to study at University, or if you want a gap year?

  • Use your “predicted grades” to choose realistically.
  • Your Progression Booklet has relevant sections to help you (on Woodle)
  • Go to WOODLE Careers, “Progression to Further study” page- tools and links to help
  • Make a careers appointment- put your name down on the list on Careers Office door- or come

to careers drop ins- always listed on the Careers Area/Office doors and noticeboards.

Upper 6th students:

Work Experience

Do we have your Work Experience or Volunteering Reference?

If you did work experience or volunteering since starting, please take a copy of your reference to the office to place on your student file as soon as possible.

If you have taken part in other schemes, evidence of this and your own written records/ reflections are also very useful for your file. Tutors will see these when writing your UCAS REFERENCE.

Lower 6th students:

STEM POTENTIAL PROGRAMME

Y12 and Y13 students take part in subject specific workshops relevant for the STEM subjects they are undertaking at A-level. They are paired with a current Imperial undergraduate e-mentor to provide them with online support and information.

STEM Potential students also receive support with their university applications through general application information and workshops on personal statements and university interviews.
