You have been hired by leaders in your colony to help promote settlement. In groups of 3 you will create a persuasive poster that is informational and alluring to potential settlers. You will be presenting you posters to another history class and they will vote on their preferred settlement. If you receive the most votes, you get 10 points automatically added to your grade. You will need to bring a poster or trifold to class by Thursday, 9/29.

Step 1: With your group research the information below. Answer questions on a separate sheet of paper if needed.

TOPIC 1: REASONS FOR SETTLEMENT

1.) Why was your colony established (created)? Think about- was it for political reasons (ex. Religious freedom)? Economic reasons (make money more England with Mercantilism?)

3. How could this benefit a potential colonist? (What would they like about the reasons for settlement? What may attract them there?)

TOPIC 2: GEOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE

1.  What is the geography of your colony? (Location, Colonial Region, Physical Features, Natural Resources)

2.  What is the climate of your colony? (Typical Weather Patterns)

3.  How could this benefit a potential colonist? (What would they like about the Geography and Climate? Why may this attract them there?)

TOPIC 3: RELIGION

1.  Describe the role that religion plays in your colony. (Do you have to belong to a certain religion? Is it part of the government there, or separate? How important is it to colonists’ lives?)

2.  Describe in detail the beliefs and characteristics of religious groups in your colony. (Rules, Rituals, Holidays, etc. How are they different from other religions?)

3.  How could this benefit a potential colonist? (What would they like about the Religious environment there? Why may this attract them there?)

TOPIC 4: GOVERNMENT

1.  What form/type of government exists in your colony? (Look at your “Founding Documents foldable for ideas and info)

2.  Who can participate in your colony’s government? (Look at your “Founding Documents foldable for ideas and info. Who cannot participate? Why/Why not?)

3.  How could this form of government benefit a potential colonist? (What would they like about the way the government is there? Why may this attract them there?)

TOPIC 5: ECONOMY

1.  What economic activities exist in your colony? (How do they make money? Make sure to include any natural resources/raw materials they have and how those are used.)

2.  What opportunities for job/careers are available?

3.  How could this benefit a potential colonist? (What would they like about the way the economy is there? Why may this attract them there?)

TOPIC 6: SETTLERS

1.  Describe the characteristics of the people in your colony. (Men? Women? Families? People looking for a new start? Religions? Etc.)

2.  How would a potential colonist benefit from the atmosphere created by the people? (What would they like about the other people there? Why may this attract them there?)

TOPIC 7: RIVAL COLONY (ALL PARTNERS WILL WORK ON THIS TOPIC TOGETHER)

1.  Which colony do you think will be your biggest competitor? Why?

2.  What could you tell colonists that would make them not want to settle in your rival’s colony? (What are some of the negatives about the other colonies?)

3.  Describe how your colony is better than your rival colony. (Get braggy!)

Step 2: Create a jingle and a slogan.

1.  What is the slogan for your colony? It must reflect a motivation for people to settle in your colony. It should be written on your poster.

Step 3: Create/Print 6 images

You must have 6 images for your poster. 3 of the images must be hand drawn. 3 images may be printed. Should be NEAT, THOUGHTFUL and COLORFULJ

Step 4: Create an Artifact (Optional, Possible 5 Point Bonus)

This artifact should represent the most important and appealing aspect of your colony.

Step 5: You will be required to present your poster in a gallery walk format to another history class. In order to receive credit for the presentation you must:

1.  Tell colonists why they should come to your colony (multiple reasons)

2.  Act professionally and responsibly

3.  Present your jingle (either live or recorded)

4.  (Optional: Dress professionally or with historical accuracy)
