Strategy is the foundation

Pre-work instructions

Welcome to Strategy is the Foundation!

The focus of the classroom course is on applying the methodology you have researched and learned in your prior experiences and coaching you’ve received on your prior engagements in a challenging but safe environment. This course was designed to address the main challenges faced by intermediate staff. Over the course of three days, technology-enabled classroom experiences will simulate the following audit tasks:

•Understand the business

•Categorize accounts

•Understand significant classes of transactions

•Team planning event

•Confirm our understanding of significant classes of transactions

•Coaching

•Test of controls

•Assess the impact

The explicit learning objectives of this course are to:

•Apply the behaviors and skills (mental models) required of an Intermediate Staff by supporting the planning and execution phases of a quality audit.

•Proactively work with the team towards successful completion of tasks by actively seeking solutions through research, challenging evidence and performing self-review.

•Take ownership of work and promote self-development by applying feedback received for self-improvement, seeking appropriate training for development, being self-sufficient and self-managing, and by working on more complex areas of the audit

•Demonstrate understanding of the purpose of the tasks you are completing to ensure you meet the objective of the task by effectively applying audit and accounting knowledge, understanding the “big picture”, and by producing high quality documentation that meets the specific audit objectives

•Identify your impact on the client when performing tasks, working to build and nurture the client relationship whilst maintaining professional skepticism by demonstrating knowledge of the client’s business and their industry and effectively communicating with clients, keeping their interests and needs in mind.

•Identify your impact on the audit by considering your role within a larger engagement team by sharing relevant information, inspiring others to contribute, coaching junior team members, being conscious of the time allocated to execute and spent on tasks

This event consists of two parts: a pre-work simulation completed via an eLearning and a five-day in-class session.

To maximize our time in the classroom, learning of theory and company background are required prerequisites, and there will be no time to revisit this in the classroom. To be prepared for the course and be on the same level as the other members of your assigned team, please ensure you have completed your required pre-work eLearning. You must complete the pre-work eLearning prior to attending the event. You will not be allowed to attend the in-class session if you do not complete the pre-work eLearningprior to the event. The pre-work should take you approximately one hour to complete. You will need to answer 2 questions correctly to successfully complete the eLearning.

Included within the pre-work, is a task to upload client data into GL Analyzer. Two videos are referenced that should be viewed in advance of performing that task. Additionally, two resource items can be referenced for assistance in loading the data (links to guides within EY Atlas):

-General Ledger AnalyzerSQL functional guide

-General Ledger AnalyzerSQL QRC - Create and prepare a project for use
