Welcome to St. Croix

While St. Croix is part of the United States, life can be very different from life on the mainland. This document will help you with some basic information about St. Croix. As you move through the process of relocating here, please let us know how we can help you.

St. Croix is a part of the United States Virgin Islands, a territory of the United States of America. At approximately 82 square miles, St. Croix is the largest of the US Virgin Islands. Since Columbus first came to St. Croix and was driven off by the Indians, seven different countries have flown their flag here until the United States purchased the islands in 1917.

The island ranges from arid on the East End to the ‘rain forest’ on the West End of the island. The demographics are quite diverse with Crucians being joined by people from Puerto Rico, the United States mainland, and down island.

English is the primary language with many people speaking Spanish as a second language. The primary religion is Christianity but our diverse population has also created homes for Rastafari, Islam, and Judaism.

Whatever you do while you’re here … don’t forget to drive on the left!

This list is a good starting point for information about St. Croix. This list does not include every option available, only our primary suggestions. If you would like additional information about any topic, please let us know.

Phone Book

The phone bill is available online at VIPhoneBook.com and there is an iPhone app (search for USVI Directory in the app store) to access our local phone book as well.

Newspapers

We have two printed newspapers (The Avis, Virgin Islands Daily News) and three online papers (VirginIslandsDailyNews.com, StCroixSource.com, VIConsortium.com). Home Delivery is not available on St. Croix but you can purchase papers at most stores and gas stations.

Mail / Shipping

We do not have home delivery of mail on St. Croix. Most people obtain a PO Box at a post office convenient to where they live (example: if you live on the East End, the closest post office is located in Gallows Bay). Occasionally, you can get mail delivered to a box at the end of your street but that is based upon availability. To check on availability, you can contact the nearest post office who will put you in contact with the mail carrier for the area to check if a box is available. To get more information about the cost and availability of PO Boxes, stop in at the post office location or read more at USPS.com/manage/PO-Boxes.htm.

The USPS considers St. Croix a local mail delivery so we recommend using USPS over FedEx or UPS. Both FedEx and UPS consider the US Virgin Islands an international territory and charge much higher rates than USPS.

If a vendor will not ship to St. Croix, another option is to have them ship to VI Cargo (VICargo.com) or Paradise Freight (ParadiseFreight.com). Both companies have an office near Miami. You send your shipment to yourself at their address and email them the invoice for the item. They will put your shipment on the weekly boat to St. Croix, notify you that the shipment has arrived and you go to pick it up and pay for the shipping at their office

Cell Phones

AT&T and Sprint are the primary carriers on island. If you have a different Stateside cell carrier, check with them before using your cell phone here. Some plans consider St. Croix out of their territory and charge very high fees for usage.

Produce

A HUGE tip for any new comers to St. Croix: Fresh Produce is shipped in on Mondays & is usually put out on the grocery store shelves on Tuesday. So the best time to go shopping at grocery stores for produce is Tuesday or Wednesday. If you wait until Saturday or Sunday you’re probably going to find slim pickings!

Dining

St. Croix has a wide variety of amazing restaurants. Dress is typically casual with no restaurants requiring a jacket or tie. Many restaurants change their hours throughout the year in response to tourist season with some closing during August or September so it’s best to call ahead, particularly during that time of year.

The St. Croix Food and Wine Experience (STXFoodandWine.com) is a culinary celebration to benefit the St. Croix Foundation (STXFoundation.org). Taking place in early April, there is a long schedule of events ranging from private dinners to large events such as Wine in the Warehouse. The whole event culminates in Taste of St. Croix which is a great way to sample the best food from all of our restaurants. Tickets for many of the events sell out quickly, so plan ahead and get your tickets early.
