I hope your summer was enjoyable and restful. I feel very fortunate to be your math teacher and believe it will be a great school year. If you have any questions or comments, please let me know.

Supplies: (#1-5 should be brought to class every day):

1)3 Ring Binder-Divide your binder into three sections:

A) NOTES AND DO NOWS;

B)PREP TASKS/SKILLS CHECKS;

C)QUIZZES/TESTS;

(you may divide your notebook with tabbed dividers, colored paper, or any other separator that makes your binder organized and easy to access).

2)Loose Leaf Paper

3)2-3 sharpened pencils with erasers

4)Scientific Calculator(Preferably a TI-30XIIS)

5)Assignment Book- Assignments and upcoming assessment dates should be listed in

the school-issued assignment book.

Textbook-No textbook will be issued to the students. Notes and reference materials to support the lessons will be provided or developed during a lesson. All notes will also be available on the teacher website. A request may be made in writing to have a text book issued to a student. All textbooks must be returned at the end of the current school year. Textbooks will be available to all students in the classroom and the library.

Recommended: Pencil Pouch- Use your pouch for pencils and calculator.

Grading:

  • Grading Structure: Through theon-line parent portal, parents can view student’s math progress. Parents who utilize this system can access all of their child’s grades and teacher comments regarding a student’s progress.
  • PREP TASKS: Will be assigned regularly. The assignments may be used to reinforce concepts/skills reviewed in class that day or may help to prepare students for an upcoming topic. These assignments, if completed with care, will assist the student in preparing for upcoming Skill Checks, Quizzes, and Tests.
  • SKILLS CHECKS: Graded “take-home” or “in-class” assignments that not only reinforce skills/concepts discussed in class, but encourages a deeper understanding of the topic. These assignments may be worth anywhere from 5 to 100 points.
  • QUIZZES: A number of quizzes will be given each quarter. Quizzes will be worth anywhere from 10 to 100 points. These will assist the student in preparing for any cumulative tests. Some quizzes will act as “Notebook Checks”, requiring students to access information from their notebooks.

NOTEBOOK CHECKS: are a way to reinforce the need for a complete and organized notebook. Therefore, all notes, “do nows”, and assessments should be dated and complete.

TESTS: Tests will count twice for a total of 200 points when calculating 10-week averages.

10 Week Averages will be calculated using the following formula:

Absences:

The student is responsible for making up any notes and work missed during the absence. It will be the student’s responsibility to check the teacher’s calendar on the school website, contact a peer, or see the teacher upon return. For extended absences, contact the Guidance Office.

Missing assignmentsmust be turned in promptly upon returning to school. Students will generally be given an additional day to complete an assignment missed due to an absence. It is important to hand in any work that was assigned before the absence as well.

Extra Help:

I will be available for extra help. Students should contact the teacher to arrange.

Improving Your Grade:

When a quiz is returned to a student, he/she will have a specified amount of time to complete optional quiz corrections.

If the corrections are completed correctly and correction guidelines are followed, a student can earn back ½ of the points that were originally deducted. See the quiz correction guidelines.

Although quiz corrections are optional, they are strongly encouraged. This will be the only way to earn extra credit, if you wish to improve your average.

Quiz corrections show that you have identified your errors or misunderstandings regarding the current quiz topic and have made an effort to correct these mistakes. It will help you perform better on future quizzes and tests, since understanding a new math topic usually depends upon how well you know prior math topics.

Classroom Guidelines:

1)Be on time for class.

2)Be prepared with all class materials. Being unprepared may result in point deductions on your participation grade. Being unprepared wastes class time for all.

3)Sit in your assigned seat when you enter class.

4)Write down your prep task and begin your “do now” question the moment you sit down (without talking). When you step into class, it is work time.

5)Place your assignment on the corner of your desk when class begins.

6)Leave hats and coats in your locker. Gum, candy, and electronic devices are not permitted in the classroom.

7)Be courteous and respectful to one another at all times.

8)Be ready to learn and do not interfere with your classmates’ ability to listen and learn. Interfering with the learning process will not be tolerated.

9)Remain seated until dismissal by your teacher.

Due on the next school day:

Read/review/study the Welcome Letter (you will have a quiz tomorrow to make sure you understand the information you have read).

Ask a parent/guardian to read/review the Welcome Letter.

Sign the RECEIPT OF WELCOME LETTER handout and ask a parent/guardian to sign the form as well.

Return the RECEIPT OF WELCOME LETTER handout to me.

Place the Welcome letter in the “Notes” section of your math notebook.

Quiz Correction Guidelines

1) Write the question and the correct solution.

If the quiz required you to “show work” on the particular question you are

correcting, you MUST show complete and correct work on your quiz corrections.

2) Explain why your new answer is correct. Be Specific.

Your explanation must show that you have a clear understanding of the error(s) you

made when you originally answered the question, as well as how you corrected the

errors. Vague answers will not be accepted.

3) Staple quiz corrections to your original quiz and turn them into the teacher

for review.

REMEMBER: Only students that complete quiz corrections

properly AND completely

will receive credit.

For Example: The following is an example of a properly completed correction.

2) Explain what you did wrong and how you fixed your mistake(s). Be specific.

I set up the problem wrong by reversing the divisor (the number that does the dividing) and the dividend (the number that gets divided). To correct the problem I had to reverse the position of the 3 (the numerator) and the 8 (the denominator) in the division problem and recalculate.

3) Remember to staple the original quiz to your corrections.
