WELCOME TO Pre-Calculus

Dear Parent,

As your child’s Pre-Calculus teacher for 2015-2016, I wanted to present you with some information that could be helpful to you and your student as we go through the school year. Although regulations by the state do have a tendency to change, here is the information that we currently have.

The Pre-Calculus curriculum that we follow is essentially a College Algebra level course. We will move at a much slower pace than a collegiate course would follow, but the material will be advanced and will require students to apply the concepts that they have learned in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry. By the end of this course, students will be prepared to either enter a calculus curriculum or enter collegiate mathematics courses.

It is vital in any math class that students stay up to date and get assistance immediately if they feel they are falling behind or do not understand a concept. I will provide any assistance that I can during class time or any free time that I may have. If you feel extra help would be beneficial, we can also help find a student tutor. Let me know if this is necessary, and I will work together with the School Counselor to find an available student tutor.

Throughout nearly all of Pre-Calculus, your student will have the opportunity to use a scientific calculator and/or a graphing calculator. If possible, it would benefit your child to purchase a scientific calculator so that they can use the calculator to complete assignments at home. When any testing does arise, your child will then be proficient with using their personal calculator. For those students planning to enter college and have higher level science and mathematics courses, a graphing calculator might be a good investment. We will have the graphing calculators available in class, so it is NOT mandatory to purchase one. Should you choose to purchase a graphing calculator, we have found that the TI-84 models are the best and most universal.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to email or call me. I look forward to a fun and exciting year in Pre-Calculus!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Heather Brummer
