SOA SUMMER READING - CP ENGLISH I – 2015

Welcome to High School!

We hope you will be challenged and inspired by your reading this summer,

and we look forward to teaching you in the fall!

All CP English I studentsare required to read the following two novels:

  1. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
  2. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night by Mark Haddon*

*Parents: this novel containssome adult language and content. If you prefer for your student not to read this text,

your student may read The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho as the second novel. Students who read The Alchemist

will take a written test on this novel. Both assignments will be equally weighted.

You are expected to read these books carefully and annotate* them; critical reading may require you to reread portions of the text to understand plot details and characterization. Consider other literary techniques, as well, such as metaphor and symbolism.

*Please use paper backs for annotating even if you listen to an audio version of the text.

Do not use an electronic book only.*

Although there is no written assignment due the first day of school, you will take a test on The Book Thief and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night. Please bring BOTH BOOKS with youon the first day of school and be prepared for further assignments. Your first quarter interim grade will consist mostly of your averaged summer reading grades, so you should avoid any temptation to cut corners!

Additionally, students are expected to be familiar with basic grammar: the 8 parts of speech, parts of a sentence (subject, predicate, object/complement), phrases (at least prepositional) and clauses (dependent and independent). We will review grammar as a class but no grammar quizzes will be given for at least the first couple of weeks.
