Hancock Park School!

Classes begin Tuesday, April 4, 2006

(This Program is sponsored by the Hancock Park Booster Club)

Mission

The mission of the Hancock Park Elementary After-School Enrichment program is to provide a variety of after-school student activities that reflect the values of the school in a safe environment.

Vision

The Hancock Park Elementary After-School Enrichment Program maintains high standards of quality in the programs offered, achieves high levels of participant and parent satisfaction, and operates cost effectively.

Values

The Hancock Park Elementary After-School Enrichment Program staff and Hancock Park Elementary School Booster Club are dedicated to building and sustaining an ethical environment for learning supported by basic values: respect, honesty, integrity, compassion, fairness, and innovation.

From the Director

My name is Jacqueline Revels and I am the Enrichment Director here at Hancock Park School. On behalf of the Booster Club, I would like to welcome all new and returning parents and students to Spring 2006 Enrichment at Hancock Park!

A little bit about our program

The Enrichment Program started in 1989 as a way of providing extra curricular activities for our students. Since then it has become best known for providing fun, educational, and enriching classes for both present and alumni students of Hancock Park School. Our Enrichment classes play a vital role in encouraging children to become active members of a community of lifelong learners. Hancock Park School offers three ten-week sessions of enrichment classes each school year. A new class catalog is distributed each session. You will need to register your child each session for both new and continuing classes.

Registration/Payment

Registration is easy. Simply fill out the attached enrollment form along with your method of payment and drop it in the Drop Box located in the Main Office. Forms may be turned in through your child’s teacher; however this may cause a delay in me getting them, for they are not always turned in right away. The Drop Box will be in the office beginning Tuesday, March 21, 2006 and will remain there until Friday, April 28, 2006. Please adhere to office hours, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. I will be in my office from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. daily for those parents who are unable to get to the office before it closes. My office is located just outside the Auditorium in the Patio. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me. My phone number is (323) 633-4721. If you are unable to reach me, please leave a detailed message and I will return your call as soon as possible. Payments can be made in 3 ways: Check, Money Order, or Credit Card. Exceptions will be made for those parents who wish to pay with cash. Make checks and money orders payable to the Hancock Park Booster Club. Receipts are available upon request.

CLASS SIZE

Enrollment in a class is on a first come, first serve basis. In order to ensure that your child receives the highest benefit from a class, enrollment in most classes can be no more than 12, others may have as many as 16. If you do not receive a phone call from me, your child has been successfully enrolled in their desired class. If there are classes with fewer than 8 students registered, those classes may be cancelled. Your child will be placed on a waiting list if their registration form is received after a class is full. Whether or not your child is accepted depends solely on the teacher. So get your registration forms in right away!

YMCA/AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM

If you enroll your child in an Enrichment class and he/she is also enrolled in either the YMCA or the AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM with Ms. Lim, please tell your child to report to the YMCA Staff or to Ms. Lim as usual. They have to be accountable for all children that are registered in their programs. Kindergarten teachers will escort any children enrolled in the YMCA to their staff. Your child will be picked up before their enrichment class starts and returned to either the YMCA or their AFTERSCHOOL class after their enrichment class has ended. A list of all students participating in the Enrichment Program will be given to their perspective Coordinators (YMCA Staff or Ms. Lim) to ensure that no child misses his/her class.

TUITION

All classes start at $75.00 except for those classes with 2 stars next to them. Those classes are special programs and require more money. Many classes require a materials fee. The materials fees vary according to need. All materials fees have been included in the cost of the class. Payment is due in full to ensure your child’s spot in the class. Parents who pay for four or more classes will receive a $10 discount. If your child is enrolled in the YMCA or After school program you will receive an additional $5 discount. If for some reason you or your child is not satisfied with a particular class, you have until Friday, April 7, 2006 to receive a full refund.

CLASS CANCELLATIONS / REFUNDS

Refunds will be given to those parents who wish to cancel a class/classes for any reason before the session begins. However, refunds will not be given after April 7, 2006. If a class has to be cancelled due to low enrollment, you will be given a full refund for the class/classes.

SUPERVISION

My assistant Kymm Wilkins and I provide supervision daily. Students enrolled in the Enrichment Program should meet us at the lunch tables when the dismissal bell rings. There your child will receive a snack and be directed to their designated class. All children must be picked up promptly after class. The Enrichment staff cannot be responsible for supervision of children after classes have been dismissed. 1st thru 5th grade students who have not been picked up by the end of class will be directed to Coach Tashia who runs the After School Program for Hancock Park students, Monday thru Friday from 2:30 – 6:00 p.m. Your child’s safety is important to us. Students should not be outside of the school gates alone. Parents, please remind your child to remain inside of the school campus in view of Coach Tashia if you are unable to pick him/her up by the end of the enrichment class. All Kindergarten children must be picked up promptly after their class. It is Booster Club Policy to retain Kindergarteners who have not been picked up by the time class has ended. Your child will not be released to anyone without your written consent. Please fill out the “Permit to Release” form provided if you have made arrangements to have your child picked up by someone else. Additional forms will be available in the office throughout the semester for your convenience. The Enrichment Program is not responsible if your child misses a class or shows up for a class when it is not scheduled.

Parent Information:

*All enrichment classes are held for a total of 10 weeks except for Science Adventures.

Science Adventures offers 2, 5-week programs per Enrichment session. The first 5-week session (Physics Racers) will run from Tuesday, April 4, 2006 thru Tuesday, May 9, 2006. The second 5-week session (Wildlife Safari) will run from Tuesday, May 16, 2006, thru Tuesday, June 13, 2006. Parents will have to re-register for the second session of Science Adventures, Wildlife Safari.

Parents, please remind your child of the days and times of their Enrichment classes and to report to Jackie and Kymm when the dismissal bell rings. The Enrichment Program cannot be responsible for those students who forget to come to the lunch tables after school. We do our best to look for students who do not come directly to the tables after school, but cannot always find the students on the yard. Morning Kindergarten students and their parents should meet us at the lunch pavilion at 2:30 p.m. Teachers will escort afternoon Kindergarten students to the pavilion. There they will receive a snack and wait to be picked up by their Enrichment teachers. Thank you for your support in this matter.

In the event of a rainy day, sports classes will be cancelled and rescheduled for another day. If a class has to be cancelled due to teacher illness, there will be a make up class at the end of this Enrichment session. You will be notified of the day and time of the make-up class.

MATHEMAGICIANS

The UCMAS Mental Arithmetic education program teaches the use of the abacus to solve math problems using both hands. Level 1: Your child will learn to use the abacus for addition and subtraction with speed and accuracy, in single digits. Level 2: We will do mental calculations and double-digit calculations on the abacus. Level 3: We will cover multiplication, double-digit mental arithmetic; addition and subtraction in the hundreds.

This program goes up to 10 levels and will teach your child to progressively do double and triple digit multiplications, divisions and up to 80 digit additions and subtractions all in the head.

A St. James’ parent, Ellen Collett says, "Abacus study takes an abstract system--math-- and makes it tactile, immediate and concrete. My 5 year-old is adding and subtracting with a facility and confidence rarely seen before 2nd grade. This program allows every child--regardless of age--to become a practicing mathematician."

Level 1: Mondays 3:00 to 5:00 pm (Grades K – 3)

Level 2: Tuesdays 3:00 to 5:00 pm (open to graduates of Level 1 only)

Level 3 parents please contact Zuriani directly.

(We give the kids a 10-minute break. A healthy snack is recommended).

Payment:

A. Full 3 months (10 weeks): $300 + *materials

B. 3 month installments: $110/month + *material

*Materials for Level 1: $100 (abacus, workbooks, bag); for Level 2: $25 (workbooks)

Introducing

Rock Band

Taught by Alex Celemin, music teacher and professional rock musician. A class that incorporates music lessons and singing to develop “Young Rockers”!

KEYBOARDING/PIANO

The fact that simply listening to Mozart at a young age can dramatically enhance a young child’s intellectual capabilities is still in debate. But there is no question that learning to play Mozart on the piano can be exceptionally beneficial to young children.

Science Adventures

Yes, "hands-on" science is fun and educational!
At Science Adventures we believe that learning science is an active process. This belief is one of the key principles that have guided the development of the Science Adventures educational programs for over twenty years. During the past year over 30,000 kids experienced our "hands-on" projects while learning exciting science concepts. Our curriculum features lessons that include a lot of "hands-on, take home" projects that emphasize key science concepts based on the National Science Standards.
Science Adventures offers six different clubs during the school year. Each club meets once a week for one hour after school. Most clubs meet for five weeks.

ACADEMIC CHESS

Academic Chess was founded 13 years ago in California, and has received critical acclaim from parents, administrators, and most importantly the students.

In a time where television and video games seem to numb the minds of our youth, it is our mission at Academic Chess to bring an alternative source of stimulation and concentration into their lives. At Academic Chess we are passionate about the game of chess and are firm believers and in its’ benefits. Thinking deeply, solving problems and visualizing are all part of learning the game and can only help enhance the academic performance of children.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

Due to limited time and space all Monday classes will run for 9 weeks only. Class fees have been adjusted accordingly. All other classes (Tuesday thru Friday) will run for 10 weeks.
